Ezra Pound to his parents : letters 1895-1929 by Ezra Pound( Book )

7 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The poet Ezra Pound (1885-1972) was the only child of Homer Loomis Pound (1858-1942) and Isabel Weston Pound (1860-1948). He grew up in Philadelphia, where his father was an assayer in the U.S. Mint; was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, and at Hamilton College in upstate New York; taught briefly at Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana; then left America for London, where he lived from 1908 to the end of 1 920, after which he lived in Paris until 1 924, and then in Rapallo, Italy. His letters home reveal not only the warm affection, openness, and playfulness of the young man to his devoted parents, from schooldays through college and on into his life as teacher, poet, and critic, but also the ways in which he shared with them the ideas, influences, and experiences that went into the development of his exceptional poetic genius. He kept them in touch with his progress in realising his ambition to become a good and powerful poet, with what he was writing and doing, who he was meeting, his dealings with publishers, editors, and magazines, and his bold plans for reforms and revolutions. The letters are a rich mine of information about Pound himself and about the literary and social worlds in which he moved and had his being. They also display his epistolary idiosyncrasies and his inventive and witty way with words. Altogether they are of great human as well as literary and historical interest, and give an intimate insight into this revolutionary and influential poet's life and work. This is an essential volume for anyone interested in Pound, and an irresistible book for the general reader curious about literary life in the twentieth century
Cathay by Ezra Pound( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"First published in 1915 by Elkin Matthews of London, Cathay, Ezra Pound's early monumental work, originally contained fourteen translations from the Chinese and a translation of the Anglo-Saxon poem "The Seafarer." Over time, these poems have been widely read and loved as both translations and original poetry. In 1916, Cathay was reprinted in the book Lustra without 'the Seafarer' and with four more Chinese poems. Cathay is greatly indebted to the notes of a Harvard-trained scholar Ernest Fenellosa, which were provided to Pound in London in 1913 by Fenellosa's widow Mary. 'In Fenellosa's Chinese poetry materials,' Pound scholar Zhaoming Qian writes, 'Pound discovered a new model that at once mirrored and challenged his developing poetics.' Edited by Qian, this centennial edition reproduces for the first time the text of the original publication plus the poems from Lustra and transcripts of all the relevant Fenollosa notes and Chinese texts. Also included is a new foreword by Ezra Pound's daughter Mary de Rachewiltz, providing an appreciation and fascinating background material on this pivotal work of Pound's oeuvre"
The cantos of Ezra Pound by Ezra Pound( Book )

21 editions published between 1961 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Acknowledged as the leader of the free world after World War Il, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is one of the most significant and compelling figures of the twentieth century. Yet no previous book has dealt critically with his foreign policy during the crucial years between 1943 and 1945. In this penetrating study, Amos Perlmutter exposes the myth of New Deal war diplomacy, showing the devastating results of FDR's not-so-grand alliance with Joseph Stalin, one of the most

Ezra Pound, father and teacher : discretions by Mary de Rachewiltz( Book )

10 editions published between 1975 and 2017 in English and French and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mary de Rachewiltz's autobiographical account, Ezra Pound, Father and Teacher, which first appeared as a New Directions Paperbook in 1975, is now reissued with a new afterword by the author. Set against the background of Fascist Italy and the Tyrolean Alps where she spent the early years of her childhood, the story Ezra Pound's daughter tells movingly reveals a side of the poet which is seldom touched upon, that of devoted father, and at the same time serves to illuminate many of the more difficult, personal passages of The Cantos. But the book is more than a mere memoir, for Mary de Rachewiltz is an accomplished poet and translator in her own right, guided in her craft under her father's tutelage; through her stylized, often oblique prose technique we are enabled to appreciate more deeply Pound's inner anguish during the war years and the strains put upon him by the circumstances of his life. Many of the scenes described are illustrated with photographs, while the narrative itself gleams with lines from The Cantos that light up the events of the author's life as her life lights up the poetry.
