Pre-Raphaelite women artists by
Jan Marsh(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 511 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
FINE ARTS When the Pre-Raphaelites broke upon the British art world in 1849, they became a sensation. Much has been written about this group William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rosetti, and others but this work, which serves as a catalog for a 1998 traveling exhibition in Britain, is the first attempt to look at the role of women in the movement. Marsh and Nunn, both specialists in the Pre-Raphaelites and Victorian women artists, look at the paintings, drawings, and photography of 20 women, ranging from Elizabeth Siddal to Julia Margaret Cameron. Like their male counterparts, they focused on medieval themes women in long, elaborately designed gowns and flowing hair or scenes from legends. But they also experimented with other subjects baby portraits, children playing, saints. Featured here are 231 richly detailed illustrations, 65 in color, many reproduced and documented for the first time, giving these neglected artists the attention they deserve. The work also includes brief biographies, photos of the artists, and a catalog of individual works. Highly recommended for art and women's studies collections

Uncommon ground : land art in Britain, 1966-1979(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Uncommon Ground proposes a new reading of British art between the mid-1960s and early 1980s, placing landscape and nature at the heart of the emerging avant-garde movements of the period. During a time of seismic cultural and political change, artists on both sides of the Atlantic turned away from the enclosed space of the gallery and went out into the landscape. Encompassing sculpture, performance, photography, film, Minimalism and Conceptual art--particularly the latter--the wide-ranging practices represented in this book engage with the once-derided and seemingly exhausted genre of landscape. Uncommon Ground includes works by Andy Goldsworthy, Anthony McCall, Antony Gormley, Barry Flanagan, Boyle Family, Bruce McLean, David Lamelas, David Nash, David Tremlett, Derek Jarman, Garry Fabian Miller, Hamish Fulton, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Jan Dibbets, John Hilliard, John Latham, Keith Arnatt, Richard Long, Roelof Louw, Roger Ackling, Roger Palmer, Susan Hiller, Thomas Joshua Cooper and Tony Cragg

Ancient landscapes, pastoral visions : Samuel Palmer to the Ruralists by
Anne Anderson(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book examines the legacy of Samuel Palmer, who in the 1800s turned his back on the city and retreated to Shoreham, Kent, with a band of 'brothers' known as the Ancients. They sought to capture the essence of the English countryside, which led to the idealisation of rural life. In the 1920s Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland rediscovered the work of Samuel Palmer. Against a contemporary background of globalisation and environmental concerns, the search for England continues in the work of the Brotherhood of Ruralists; even in 21st century, the passtoral tradition still offers us the comfort, albeit tinged with the sadness of loss, of Little England
