A VHF transmitter and system synchronizer for use in a portable Doppler radar system by Paul E Johnston( Book )

2 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 99 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A portable 50 MHz transmitter capable of 15 kW peak rf power output at up to 5 percent duty cycles is described. The transmitter and a system synchronizer, also described, are combined with a frequency-coherent receiver, an on-line minicomputer processor with oscillograpic display, and a novel collinear antenna to provide a highly portable VHF Doppler radar system. The system, complete with 5-degree azimuthal beamwidth antenna, weighs about 250 kg, and can be installed in remote locations in a few days. It has been used successfully in studies of equatorial and auroral ionospheric irregularities during the past several years

Instrumentation of small rockets for polar cap absorption studies by J. C Haslett( Book )

3 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The instrumentation of small sounding rockets for scientific experiments in the region from 50 km to approximately 110 km is described. These particular rockets were developed to measure the diurnal variations of proton spectra and electron densities during solar proton events. Seven rockets were flown with each carrying a three-channel proton spectrometer and a three-frequency Faraday rotation experiment. The proton spectrometer and Faraday rotation experiment are discussed in some detail.Because of difficulties experienced with the telemetry, considerable telemetry development had to be done. Although the telemetry was developed specifically for these rockets, it is of general interest and is described. In particular the report mentions modifications of the rocket antenna system, the voltage controlled oscillators, and the modification of a parametric amplifier for use with the Ft. Churchill range telemetry.Block diagram and photographs are included in the text, while detailed schematics of the pertinent electronics are included in an appendix
Doppler spectrum analysis using a minicomputer by Raymond A Greenwald( Book )

1 edition published in 1972 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report describes the interfacing and programming of a minicomputer for Doppler spectrum analysis. The interfaces include analog-to-digital converters for data input and digital-to-analog converters for display of the Doppler spectra on an XY oscilloscope. These interfaces are contained in the computer chassis which has the dimensions of a suitcase. The software that is included in this report is specifically written for 64 point Doppler spectra. The Fast Fourier Transform algorithm is used in the analysis, and the time required to transform a 64 point array is 23 milliseconds. Control of the spectral analysis program is by means of 16 data switches on the front panel of the computer
A plasmasphere sounder satellite by W Calvert( Book )

1 edition published in 1972 in English and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A satellite with a radio sounder is an excellent measuring tool for studying the structure and dynamic behavior of the plasmasphere and its abrupt outer boundary, the plasmapause

Theory of the circular planar (guardring) Langmuir probe by Lee W Parker( Book )

2 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A computational study is presented of the properties of a guardring-type circular planar Langmuir probe, commonly flush-mounted in the skin of a satellite. This geometry results in a three-dimensional potential distribution which cannot be treated analytically, even in axially symmetric problems. Given arbitrary particle velocity distributions at infinity, the current-voltage characteristics of the external aperture grid potentials) may be determined by detailed particle trajectory calculations. The electric field and charge density distributions in the vicinity of the probe are defined at the nodes of a grid. The charge density in the Poisson equation is evaluated by summing trajectory contributions. The collected currents are similarly evaluated. The Poisson field is computed self-consistently by an iterative technique. Two kinds of particle velocity distribution are considered, e.g., a streaming Maxwellian at infinity, and photoelectric (or secondary) emission at the satellite surface. An infinite-satellite model is assumed for the Poisson case (Debye length = 1 cm). For the Laplace case (Debye length infinite), the effects of finite satellite dimensions, of Mach streaming at an angle, and of photoelectrons are investigated
Compilation of reaction rate constants measured in the ESSA flowing afterglow system to August, 1969 by Fred Fehsenfeld( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A satellite ion-electron collector by Elden C Whipple( Book )

2 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The effects of grid transparency, photoemission, and secondary emission on the currents measured by an ion-electron collector experiment flown on OGO I are examined in detail. The calculated grid transparencies agree with laboratory tests. The measured photocurrents as a function of angle of incidence i agree reasonably well with the calculated current assuming the yield is proportional to (cos i + sec i). Equations are derived for the effects or secondary emission on the background currents caused by particles with energies greater than 30 eV, from which the fluxes and yields may be at times be calculated. The energies of the primaries can be estimated from the calculated secondary yields
