Berthe Morisot : 1841-1895 by Marianne Mathieu( Book )

10 editions published in 2012 in English and French and held by 475 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was a woman of extraordinary talent who carved for herself a career within the art world of nineteenth-century Paris. She was one of only a handful of women who exhibited with both the Paris Salon and the influential and innovative Impressionists. Her work, considered highly representative of the Impressionist movement, depicts the world of the bourgeoise: their clothes, their life-style, their surroundings and their relationships. Through her unusual talent, the everyday life of the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie becomes tangible. In this beautiful book, around one hundred paintings from museums and private collections around the world are reproduced full-page and in colour, accompanied by original commentaries, which follow the artist's career from her training with Corot to her final work. The book examines her subtle, refined artistry, focused on the theme of women and children, and her use of pastel colours that recalls Watteau, Boucher and Fragonard. Her life and personality are discussed in detail, and the originality of her art - through its themes and technique - is highlighted, revealing its influence and its links with that of such illustrious contemporaries as Monet and Renoir. The exhibition that this book accompanies is the first retrospective of Morisot's work to be held in Paris for nearly half a century" -- Publisher description

Monet's Impression sunrise : the biography of a painting by Claude Monet( Book )

4 editions published in 2014 in English and German and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In April 1874, thirty artists, among them Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Cezanne and Degas, participated in an exhibition held in a Paris studio. A scathing review in the newspaper 'Le Charivari' appeared under the title 'The Exhibition of the Impressionists', a derisive play on the title of one of the paintings by Monet on show, 'Impression, soleil levant' (Impression, Sunrise), thus giving this group of artists the name by which they would henceforth be known. This intriguing and colourful biography of Monet's world-famous painting accompanies an exhibition celebrating the 140th anniversary of the First Impressionist Exhibition.0Author Biography: Marianne Mathieu is Deputy Director, Head of Collections and Communication of the Musee Marmottan Monet, Paris. Dominique Loebstein is the former head of documentary studies in the painting department of the Musee d'Orsay, Paris.0Exhibition: Musée Monet Marottan, Paris, France (18.9.-18.1.2015)

5 editions published in 2011 in French and held by 134 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Henri-Edmond Cross, a leading neo-Impressionism with Signac, is one of the painters who played a major role in the artistic revolutions of the early 20th century. At the end of the 19th century, the question of the pure color of the prism used in the keys is theorized and stippled rapidly advancing. For the first time, this exhibition shows the originality of research Cross and its influence on artists cats, especially Matisse. If Georges Seurat, the founder of Neo-Impressionism, even the art scene in 1891, two painters, Paul Signac and Henri-Edmond Cross, will put his theories into practice, develop and disseminate to young artists. Henri Matisse, looking for all the experiments on color, spent the summer of 1904 in Saint-Tropez alongside Signac and Cross. He learned this technique and followed the advice of Cross which he appreciates the friendship. He experimented néoimpressionnisme especially in the monumental painting Luxe, calm and voluptuousness (Orsay Museum). He will find the limits of this research but this step is essential to be born the following summer in Collioure by Derain in the company, what will be called Fauvism. The exhibition presents 73 major works by HE Cross from 1891 until his death in 1910. Co-production with the Marmottan-Monet museum and research conducted by Franc̨oise Baligand can expose paintings lent by European and American museums but also to show the farm, which belonged to morning Matisse (Museum of Nancy) next to the closes, evening (private collection). Cross is one of the leading watercolorists. The Matisse Museum will present 39 watercolors he painted Cross on the ground and watercolors painted by Matisse in Collioure to appropriate landscapes. The both of them have left to play with the light color of paper without force by a drawing. The exhibition offers a chance to discover first of the finest works of Cross (34 paintings) but which has never been demonstrated, its influence on Matisse, who in turn will open new fields in the color. Unlike Signac, he rejoices that Matisse is one of the painters who "will deepen the laws of optical mixing, not to surrender to them, but to break away." If Cross was instrumental in helping Matisse explored the contribution of neo-impressionism, in turn, prompted Matisse Cross to open up to other issues, including that of the line and dare the color tones in bold. This exhibition follows on the Matisse-Derain, Collioure, 1905, was a fawn, the Matisse Museum in 2005-2006 was organized with the Museum of Ceret. To understand how the neo-Impressionism Cross played a major role in the work of Matisse, the museum presents 13 paintings by Matisse, his first works on the ground in 1896 in Britain, the landscapes of Corsica, St Tropez Collioure but also works by Camoin, Manguin Valtat and Derain. We present the picture that Matisse had offered to Cross and his wife in 1905, tulips, parrots (the Albertina Museum, Vienna), painted in the pointillist technique very wide, and also important paintings beasts painted in Collioure: The Moulade (private collection), Street of the Sun at Collioure (Matisse Museum in Le Cateau-Cambrai). This co-production with the Musée Marmottan-Monet, Matisse Museum in Paris allows to explore a new direction in artistic adventures related to Matisse."--Transliterated from publisher's website
