Ethnicity, nationalism and conflict in and after the Soviet Union : the mind aflame by Valeriĭ Aleksandrovich Tishkov( )

10 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 1,559 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Valery Tishkov is a well-known Russian historian and anthropologist, and former Minister of Nationalities in Yeltsin's government. His account of ethnicity, nationalism, and conflict in the territory of the former Soviet Union draws on inside knowledge of major events and extensive primary research. Challenging established interpretations of ethnic factors, Tishkov argues that ethnicity has a multifaceted role: it is the most accessible basis for political mobilization; a means of controlling power and resources in a transforming society; and therapy for the great trauma suffered by individuals and groups under previous regimes. This complexity helps explain the contradictory nature and outcomes of public ethnic policies based on a doctrine of ethnonationalism. Tishkov concludes that the Soviet and post-Soviet nations, as well as the current violent ethno-politics, stem from decrepit doctrinal projects, from elitist efforts to build a state on ethnic principles and a society on exclusivist identities, and from political malfunctioning

Gender, peace, and conflict by Inger Skjelsboek( Book )

6 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book explores the key role of gender in peace research, conflict resolution and international politics. Rather than simply 'add gender and stir' the aim is to transcend different disciplinary boundaries and conceptual approaches to provide a more integrated basis for research and study. To this end the book combines theoretical chapters alongside empirical case studies to demonstrate the importance of a gender perspective to both theory and practice in conflict resolution and peace research

The Barents region : cooperation in Arctic Europe( Book )

6 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 183 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Post-Cold War Europe has seen various regional initiatives launched along the former East-West divide. Ties and trade routes pre-dating 1914 are being taken up once again. Somewhat surprisingly, as this book reveals, the Barents Region in the Scandinavian and Russian Arctic is emerging as one of the most dynamic and versatile East-West initiatives in Europe. Its unique, two-pillared institutional structure ensures that state as well as local authorities are drawn into deliberations, as are representatives from the European Commission and the regional Saami organisation. The Barents Region surveys regional cooperation in Arctic Europe. With contributions from leading Scandinavian and Russian scholars on Northern affairs, this volume examines the Barents Region as a political initiative, its historical and institutional architecture and its contributions to economic and environmental management in the North. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the Barents Region on security in Arctic Europe and its relationship to the wider process of European integration
Internal conflict and governance by Kumar Rupesinghe( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 172 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Violence, war and internal conflicts have assumed a new intensity with the decline of the Cold War. Over 32 civil wars are raging today. By the year 2000, our world may well witness over 100 million refugees as a direct result of internal wars. Internal conflicts - ethnic, ideological, or conflicts over democracy and governance - are likely to increase in the future. This volume consists of case-studies and more theory-oriented papers dealing with Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. Taken together, they spell out implications of wide general interest. Several authors stress the need to develop theories on conflict transformation and how popular organisations can participate in peace-building through non-violent approaches. The focus of this important collection is on questions of identity formation, democracy and violence in the south
Nuclear rivalry and international order( Book )

6 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Cold War may have ended, and with it the superpower rivalry, but the world still contains many nuclear-armed states. This wide-ranging analysis of the continuing role of nuclear weapons in inter-state rivalry shows how they remain a central issue for the future of world peace. Determining the role of such weapons is crucial to the prospects for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The book starts by examining the relevance of nuclear weapons to the 'long peace' between the superpowers during the Cold War. Were they a necessary condition for peace? Were they irrelevant or only marginally relevant to that peace? Can such questions be answered at all? Can the record of the past point to a future role for nuclear weapons? The answers to these questions lead, in the second half of the book, to discussion of the present and future role of nuclear weapons and the opportunities for disarmament and non-proliferation. This book provides a timely and comprehensive review of the role of nuclear weapons in the 'long peace' and its relevance for the contemporary problem of nuclear proliferation among regional rival states. It will be of interest to students of strategic and defence studies, peace studies, international relations and South and East Asian studies, as well as to all those concerned with nuclear issues, such as journalists, diplomats and international organizations and agencies
Resource conflict in the Horn of Africa by John Markakis( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In recent decades, the Horn of Africa has been engulfed in spiralling conflict, dire poverty, widespread famine and endemic disease." "Explanations for the malaise that has afflicted this part of Africa usually focus on ethnicity as the cause of many of the conflicts. Although ethnicity is often a factor, the substance of the conflict is more often intense competition over scarce and diminishing resources, rather than a clash of cultures. This book addresses the root cause of the problem, which is the widening gap between the resource base of a poorly endowed region and its rapidly expanding population." "Resource Conflict in the Horn of Africa will be invaluable reading for the student and specialist alike in African and development studies, environmentalism, and political science."--Jacket
