Facing the reality of drug-resistant tuberculosis in India : challenges and potential solutions : summary of a joint workshop by the Institute of Medicine, the Indian National Science Academy, and the Indian Council of Medical Research by Steve Olson( )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 1,501 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An estimated 8.8 million people fell ill with tuberculosis (TB) in 2010 and 1.4 million died from the disease. Although antibiotics to treat TB were developed in the 1950s and are effective against a majority of TB cases, resistance to these antibiotics has emerged over the years, resulting in the growing spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB. Due to challenges in timely and accurate diagnosis of drug-resistant TB, length and tolerability of treatment regimens, and expense of second-line anti-TB drugs, effectively controlling the disease requires complex public health interventions. The IOM Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation held three international workshops to gather information from local experts around the world on the threat of drug resistant TB and how the challenges it presents can be met. Workshops were held in South Africa and Russia in 2010. The third workshop was held April 18-19, 2011, in New Delhi, India, in collaboration with the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Council of Medical Research. The aim of the workshop was to highlight key challenges to controlling the spread of drug-resistant strains of TB in India and to discuss strategies for advancing and integrating local and international efforts to prevent and treat drug-resistant TB. This document summarizes the workshop."--Publisher's description

Probiotic foods in health and disease by India Probiotics Symposium( Book )

7 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Probiotic Foods in Health and Disease" compiled by leading experts is a blend of fundamental and applied research related to the use of these important organisms in enhancement of human health. The book aims at covering all aspects of the intestinal microflora and offers a comprehensive review of the broad array of effects that can be attributed to probiotic usage. While the thrust remains the latest and most exciting findings in the field of gut health, it also opens a window to the possible role of probiotics beyond the gut such as oral health care, allergic disorders and women's health. The book also reviews pertinent legislation regulating the use of probiotics across the globe with special emphasis on Japan, a country which pioneered the establishment of a regulatory framework for functional foods, or foods that promote a health benefit besides providing basic nutrition. Each chapter offers a insight of the topic, reviews current research and discusses future direction. Most of the references that have been cited in the book chapters are recent, exploit modern methodologies, good controls and rational explanations for the probiotic benefits"--Provided by publisher

Haemaphysalis ticks of India by G Geevarghese( Book )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ticks are obligate blood sucking arthropods found in almost every region of the world. They are very important vectors of human and animal diseases. Tick-borne protozoan diseases such as Theileriasis and Babesiosis cause mortality and morbidity in domestic animals in many countries including India. An understanding of taxonomy, vector biology and ecology in the geographic regions of each country is essential so that a programme of control measures can be implemented. This book focuses on the ticks found in India and will be invaluable for health authorities, tick biologists and veterinary researchers. It covers taxonomic identification, medical importance and bionomics of haemaphysaline ticks. Presents the taxonomy and biological description of the 42 haemaphysaline ticks which are found in the Indian subcontinent. Includes information on the ecology and biology of many of these species. Keys provided for subgeneric and individual identification will be useful for easy identification of Indian haemaphysaline ticks
