Max Ernst : a retrospective by Max Ernst( Book )

5 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 780 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Max Ernst (1891-1976) is one of the few incontrovertibly great artists of the twentieth century. This book provides a unique opportunity of assessing Max Ernst's achievement. The extensive plate section includes works in all medias and genres -- painting, sculpture, works on paper, book illustration -- and from all periods of the artist's career. In his introductory essay, Werner Spies reviews the artist's oeuvre, pointing to certain basic attitudes and procedures that informed all his work. Essays by other well-known scholars discuss the symbolism of his Surrealist imagery, the influence of Romanticism and of the North American Indians on his work, and his ties with England. Max Ernst's own 'Biographical Note', lavishly illustrated with documentary photographs and further examples of his work, and interspersed with other writings by the artist, provide profound and fascinating insights into his life and art. "Max Ernst: A Retrospective" is an indispensable volume on the life and art of one of hte few truly international artists of the twentieth century. -- From publisher's description
Amedeo Modigliani : paintings, sculptures, drawings by Amedeo Modigliani( Book )

Donald Judd by Donald Judd( Book )

7 editions published in 2004 in English and German and held by 715 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Beginning as a critic and painter, Donald Judd moved into three dimensions in the early 1960s, with box-like structures arranged on the gallery floor or mounted on the wall. Initially constructed by hand, his sculptures were later industrially manufactured in such materials as galvanised iron, steel, Plexiglas and plywood. His use of brightly hued lacquers, vibrant colours and polished metals ran counter to the public's understanding of what 'minimalist' sculpture should look like." "The authors explore the conflicts between previous critical interpretations of Judd and his own philosophical, political and moral understanding of his work. They also examine the importance of colour and new man-made materials in Judd's work. The inclusion of a section on Judd's own permanent installations at the remote town of Marfa, Texas, a full chronology and a major essay by the artist on his own use of colour, completes a comprehensive survey of this compelling artist."--Publisher's description
David Smith, sculpture and drawings by David Smith( Book )

7 editions published in 1986 in English and German and held by 715 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"David Smith is judged to be the most important pioneer of a separate American movement in sculpture. He was the first to introduce welded steel, an artistic medium discovered in Europe, into twentieth-century sculpture in the New World. In his work he consiously adopted elements of Surrealism, Cubism and Constructivism movements familiar to him from a stay in Europe in 1935. In the 1950s he in turn affected the development of European welded steel sculpture, influencing such artists as Paolozzi, Luginbuhl, Tinguely, Chillida, Caro and Kricke. Until he turned to sculpture in the 1930s Smith considered himself a painter, and his drawings are among the finest products of American draughtsmanship."--Jacket

This book presents a representative selection of Kandinsky's exquisite watercolors, including rare, early works that have never been exhibited before, and dramatic pictures on dark backgrounds from the last years of Kandinsky's life. The authors, both of whom are leading Kandinsky experts, provide a wealth of information on the artist's early career, on his circle of colleagues, and on the extensive records he kept of the people who acquired and promoted his art. A chronology elucidates the crucial phases of Kandinsky's development

Typologies by Bernd Becher( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 363 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Bernd and Hilla Becher's photography can be considered conceptual art, typological study, and topological documentation. Their work can be linked to the Neue Sachlichkeit movement of the 1920s and to such masters of German photography as Karl Blossfeldt, August Sander, and Albert Renger-Patzsch. Their photographs of industrial structures, taken over the course of forty years, are the most important body of work in independent objective photography. A keynote of their contributions to "industrial archaeology" has been their creation of typologies of different types of buildings; this book, which accompanies a major retrospective exhibition, collects all known Becher studies of industrial building types and presents them as a visual encyclopedia." "Each chapter is devoted to a different structure - water towers, coal bunkers, winding towers, breakers (ore, coal, and stone), lime kilns, grain elevators, blast furnaces, steel mills, and factory facades. These are organized according to typologies, most of which are presented as tableaux or suites of about twelve images each. The book contains more than 1,500 individual images. The accompanying text by Armin Zweite is an essential art historical consideration of the Bechers' work. This ultimate Becher book stands as a capstone to the Bechers' unique body of work."--Jacket
Merz : in the beginning was Merz : from Kurt Schwitters to the present day by Kurt Schwitters( Book )

3 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 363 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Anni Albers by Anni Albers( Book )

8 editions published in 2018 in English and German and held by 353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Anni Albers (1899-1994) was a textile designer, weaver, writer and printmaker, who was among the leading pioneers of twentieth-century modernism. Throughout her fruitful career she inspired a reconsideration of fabrics, both in their functional roles and as wall hangings, truly establishing thread and weaving as a valid medium for art. In her later years, Albers took up print-making, translating many of her persistent themes and ideas into two-dimensional form. But while Albers has been extremely influential for younger generations of artists and designers, her contribution to modernist art history has, until now, been rather overlooked. In 2018, a groundbreaking exhibition, together with this accompanying publication will present Albers's most important works to fully explore and redefine her contribution to twentieth-century art and design, and highlight Albers's significance as an artist in her own right, rather than alongside her husband Josef . Contextualising Albers's early career at the Bauhaus, and her teaching years at Black Mountain College, this beautifully illustrated book will showcase major commissioned works, wall hangings, designs for commercial use, drawings and studies, jewellery designed and made by Albers and a selection of her prints
Martin Kippenberger by Martin Kippenberger( Book )

6 editions published in 2006 in English and German and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Martin Kippenberger's work has always been inextricably linked with his personal life, to the extent that at times this has dominated its critical reception. This book aims to redress the balance, concentrating on his art and exploring its visual and conceptual aspects. Kippenberger's varied oeuvre included paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photography, prints, and artist's books, executed in a wide variety of styles. The authors examine the themes underlying his work, including Socialist Realism and kitsch; self portraiture and myth; punk and anti-romanticism; exile and homelessness; the importance of humour and its roots in German political realities; and the artist's interest in language and the influence on his work of literature. The inclusion of a new translation of Kippenberger's final interview ensures his own, idiosyncratic voice is present."--Jacket
Marcel Broodthaers : a retrospective by Marcel Broodthaers( Book )

17 editions published in 2016 in 3 languages and held by 290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This catalog and the corresponding exhibition on Marcel Broodthaers are the result of the knowledge and commitment of many individuals both inside and outside the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. Many of the texts of this catalog are rooted in the presentations and discussions at the Broodthaers seminar at MoMA in 2014 that brought together many of the curators, scholars, gallerists and artists whose contributions would lay the foundation for this catalog, making it a seminar book about the artist.00Exhibition: Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain (05.10.2016-09.01.2017)

Luc Tuymans by Luc Tuymans( Book )

4 editions published in 2004 in English and German and held by 269 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Luc Tuymans has been at the forefront of the re-energising of painting over the past fifteen years. Using a restricted palette of eerily bleached-out colours and giving his paintings an apparently aged, cracked patina, he imbues everyday objects with a sense of impending menace, hinting at the terrors that lurk beneath the surface of everyday life. This book is an essential reference to the career of one of the most important painters working today."--Jacket
Gerhard Richter by Gerhard Richter( Book )

7 editions published in 2005 in English and German and held by 261 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gillian Wearing by Gillian Wearing( Book )

10 editions published in 2012 in German and English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"British conceptual artist Gillian Wearing won the Turner Prize in 1997 while still in her mid 30. This comprehensive, copiously illustrated exhibition catalog documents the first major retrospective of her video and photography based works. One of the young British artists, Wearing is represented in important collections ranging from the Tate Modern to the Guggenheim and the Hammer Museum. The key to unlocking the work of Gillian Wearing is found not in art history but in reality television, writes Ben Luke in the London Evening Standard. Not so much the tabloid fodder of the 21st century but the tough stuff from the Sixties and Seventies. Always at the grittier end of the Young British Artists spectrum, she is in essence a documentary film maker and photographer, her work weaving around the line that documentary treads between fact and fiction." --Publisher description

14 editions published in 2010 in German and English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Twenty-four years after his death, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is paying homage to the artist, educator and political activist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) in Düsseldorf, the city with which he is primarily associated. Often the object of intense debate and much hostility during his lifetime, today Beuys ranks among the 20th century's most important and most innovative figures of the artistic avant-garde and is often mentioned in the same breath as Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. This companion book shares the exhibition's goal of displaying "the complete Beuys" by presenting selected works from all phases and artistic media of his multifaceted œuvre
