Paul Klee rediscovered : works from the Bürgi collection by Paul Klee( Book )

3 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 525 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Inside Flap: Known for their subtle and vibrant color, their fantastic dream images, their wit, and their playful imagination, the works of painter Paul Klee are among the most famous and recognizable of modern art. In this ground-breaking new volume, an essential group of 150 oils, watercolors, drawings, and prints, representative of Klee's entire career, is released to the public for the first time. These unpublished works are held in the Burgi Collection. Hanni Burgi (1880-1938) and her son Rolf (1906-1967) were intimately bound to Paul Klee and his family, and during the two and a half decades Hanni knew the artist, she built up the second largest collection of his pictures in the world: as early as 1938, it was described as "a very beautiful, full collection of [Klee's] works, which reflects the whole of his development as an artist." Rolf Burgi continued to add to it after his mother's death. It was Rolf, also, who, as the Klees' closest friend and adviser, made possible their escape from Nazi Germany in 1933, and, after Paul Klee's death, administrated his estate, saved it from liquidation, and set up the Paul Klee Foundation. Offering new art-historical insight into Klee's career-from his early Impressionist-inspired works, through his Expressionism with Kandisky and his Bauhaus period between the wars-this book contains the only reproduction of these important but little-known pieces collected by the Burgis, and will become essential to all enthusiasts of the art of Paul Klee and the modern period. The Burgi Collection represents a legacy of enduring loyalty and commitment to Paul Klee and his work that this lavishly illustrated volume handsomely honours

Ferdinand Hodler : a symbolist vision by Ferdinand Hodler( Book )

12 editions published in 2008 in English and German and held by 253 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) is one of Europe's most influential artistic personalities, whose work bridged the styles of Realism, Symbolism, and the modern period. Despite initial praise, his extensive oeuvre has not always been an object of admiration; its diversity and originality, however, deserve international re-evaluation. Hodler's Symbolist vision of a large, harmonious union of man and nature is expressed both in unique and monumental figurative compositions, and in stylized landscapes of sheer mountain peaks and glinting lakes. Twenty-five years since the last retrospective, this fresh and extensive assessment of Hodler's partings invites the viewer to explore his work anew; on the one hand it represents a unique view of turn-of-the-century art and Symbolism, on the other it demonstrates a powerful and genuine interest in the depiction of man."--Jacket
Form, color, illumination : Suzan Frecon painting by Josef Helfenstein( Book )

7 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This publication is the first major exploration of the works of American abstract painter and watercolorist Suzan Frecon (b. 1941), critically acclaimed for her sensitive arrangement of color, form, and texture and for the philosophical resonance of her art. By restricting herself to nonrepresentational forms, earth-based colors, and, in the case of her watercolors, "found" pieces of paper, Frecon achieves an unequaled sense of balance and openness in her work. The book features ten oil paintings and thirty watercolors dating from the late 1990s to 2007"--Jacket

Paul Klee, his life and work by Paul Klee( Book )

7 editions published in 2001 in English and German and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the course of his creativity, Klee developed his artistic will slowly, almost hesitantly. His work formed organically. Undogmatic and open to all graphic life, he let himself be inspired by the art of the past and the present. Fairytale lyrics and grotesque satire, tender jesting and real demonism, profound mysticism and sober romanticism live in Klee's work, which always radiates his personal sphere with all its variety. In this monograph, an immensely compressed picture of the artistic as well as the human side of his career evolves by way of the extensive pictorial material and accompanying essays, a picture which gives information about "Klee's contribution to the expansion of artistic articulation"."--BOOK JACKET

Modern masters : "degenerate" art at the Kunstmuseum Bern by Kunstmuseum Bern( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Kunstmuseum Bern, the oldest museum in Switzerland, turns its gaze toward its own acquisition history in this lavish book that features artistic masterpieces considered worthless by the Nazis, and the stories of how they came to Switzerland. As a result of the Nazi regime's scorn for modern art, virtually all non-traditional art between 1933 and 1945 was banned in Germany on the grounds that it was un-German, Jewish, or Communist in nature. Those identified as "degenerate" artists were dismissed from teaching positions and forbidden to exhibit or to sell their works. This book sheds light on the historical significance and provenance of nearly 525 works by modernist greats, such as Picasso, Chagall, and Kandinsky, which were acquired by the Kunstmuseum Bern through a combination of auctions and private donations. The book traces the fates of artists who suffered under the Nazi regime and who had connections to Switzerland, including Kirchner, Klee and Dix, and contrasts the cultural policies of the Third Reich with those of Switzerland in the same period. Finally, it details the dramatic events and unprecedented efforts that went into preserving invaluable works of art

Picasso, 1905-1906 : from the rose period to the ochres of Gósol by Pablo Picasso( Book )

9 editions published in 1992 in English and French and held by 183 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The exhibition "Picasso, 1905-1906" has allowed an extension, albeit only a temporary one, ofthe permanent collections of the PicassoMuseum in Barcelona. It consisted infact of a compilation of the work whichcame immediately after Picasso's departurefrom Catalonia, in April 1904,at the end of his Blue Period. Throughthis exhibition, it has' been possible tosee the extent to which the artist's rootswere fixed in the Catalan art of the endof the century. At the same time, theartistic effervescence of Paris and hiscontacts with what was to become thevanguard of European culture stimulatedhim and encouraged his ceaseless, determined search for a new and originalform of painting which was to leadto a decisive change in his artistic language
