Views on Europe : Europe and German painting in the nineteenth century( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 202 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a superb selection of over a hundred and fifty masterpieces, ranging from Neoclassicism and Romanticism to Realism, academic experts from three great institutions impressively show how the thread of Europe was woven into German art. They outline the wide variety of themes painters picked up from the European literature and political or intellectual debate of the time, the aspects and events they recorded as observers and chroniclers, and how the painters criss-crossed Europe in every direction - from the Nordic countries to Spain, and from Greece to Russia - absorbing artistic influences and making their own contribution abroad at the same time. German nineteenth-century art was European in the best sense. Over three hundred and eighty coloured illustrations in this volume illustrate the masterpieces of this multi-faceted period."--Jacket

Conflict, time, photography by Tate Britain (Londres)( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the seconds after a bomb is detonated to a former scene of battle years after a war has ended, this moving exhibition focuses on the passing of time, tracing a diverse and poignant journey through over 150 years of conflict around the world, since the invention of photography. In an innovative move, the works are ordered according to how long after the event they were created from moments, days and weeks to decades later. Photographs taken seven months after the fire bombing of Dresden are shown alongside those taken seven months after the end of the First Gulf War. Images made in Vietnam 25 years after the fall of Saigon are shown alongside those made in Nagasaki 25 years after the atomic bomb. The result is the chance to make never-before-made connections while viewing the legacy of war as artists and photographers have captured it in retrospect. The immediate trauma of war can be seen in the eyes of Don McCullin's Shell-shocked US Marine 1968, while the destruction of buildings and landscapes are documented by Simon Norfolk's Afghanistan: Chronotopia 2001. Different conflicts will also reappear from multiple points in time throughout the exhibition. The Second World War for example is addressed in Jerzy Lewczyński's 1960 photographs of the Wolf's Lair / Adolf Hitler's War Headquarters, Shomei Tomatsu's images of objects found in Nagasaki, Kikuji Kawada's epic project The Map made in Hiroshima in the 1960s, Michael Schmidt's Berlin streetscapes from 1980 and Nick Waplington's 1993 close-ups of cell walls from a Prisoner of War camp in Wales. The exhibition is staged to coincide with the 2014 centenary and concludes with new and recent projects by British, German, Polish and Syrian photographers which reflect on the First World War a century after it began.--Tate website
Luther und die Fürsten : Selbstdarstellung und Selbstverständnis des Herrschers im Zeitalter der Reformation; [1. Nationale Sonderausstellung zum 500. Reformationsjubiläum] by Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden( Book )

24 editions published in 2015 in German and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

U-ni-ty by Michael Schmidt( Book )

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tiré du site Internet AbeBooks: "Michael Schmidt, born in Berlin in 1945, is one of Germany's greatest photographers. Following his "Ceasefire" project in 1987 (book and international touring exhibition), he addresses the question of "U-ni-ty" in this book. He traces the symbolism and iconography of political systems, their propaganda and the images of humankind they project. He explores unity, or one-ness, of individual and state, seeking out the discrepancies and the correlations. In his work he mixes found images with those of his own making to the point where reality and imagination merge, creating a densely woven structure of associations and emotions. The book is published to coincide with an exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1996 and a tour to such venues as the Sprengel Museum in Hanover and the Albertinium in Dresden, as well as a 1996 retrospective show of his work at the Photographer's Gallery in London."

Benjamin Katz : Gerhard Richter at work by Benjamin Katz( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With a career spanning almost sixty years, Gerhard Richter is among the most prominent painters of the twentieth and twenty-first century, well-known for his monumental abstract and photo-realistic works. But beyond the many instantly recognizable paintings, relatively little is still known about how Richter works, his artistic processes and philosophy. For this book, Belgian photographer Benjamin Katz--a fifty-year veteran of the art world himself--had the opportunity to capture on film the notoriously camera-shy artist at work. Armed with a pair of compact Leicas, he photographed and hand-developed eighty extraordinary black-and-white portraits of Richter painting, sketching, and mulling over his work. A keen observer, Katz shoots his subjects candidly and without the use of flash. Because of this, his photographs reflect genuine moments in the lives of their subjects, often with an almost palpable sense of humor, melancholy, or love. In addition to Richter, Katz has photographed Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Rosemarie Trockel, Martin Kippenberger, and Georg Baselitz, among many other legends of the contemporary art world, exhibiting his photographs in some of the world's biggest institutions. Katz's striking photographs of Richter will be equally well-received for the insight they offer into his celebrated career."--Publisher description

Tecumseh, Keokuk, Black Hawk : Indianerbildnisse in Zeiten von Verträgen und Vertreibung : Sonderausstellung der Staatlichen Ethnographischen Sammlungen Sachsen im Albertinum Dresden, 1. Oktober 2013 bis 2. März 2014( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in German and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The colonisation of the world by European powers led to the production of a wealth of images of the colonised cultures and peoples. Images of North American Indians play an important role in our visual culture. This publication illuminates how they are represented, as well as their political and historico-cultural background, based on the so-called 'Indian Museum' of the Dresden sculptor Ferdinand Pettrich (1798-1872). In the 1830s, Pettrich travelled to Washington and portrayed representatives of Indian tribes in 33 reliefs, statues, busts, and bozzetti made of terracotta-coloured plaster. These tribes were negotiating treaties with the US government about the future usage of the land. The portraits were created during a decisive phase of national history, when the US government's policy towards the Native Americans was becoming increasingly hostile and the young nation was striving for further expansion and a national identity, while the native inhabitants were fighting for their physical and cultural survival. Pettrich's oeuvre is an early example of the recurring motif of North American Indians in European and Euro-American art. The classically-influenced forms of these representations, the influence of the simultaneously emerging 'Indian painting', as well as the lasting fascination of the subject of 'Indians' are presented here, along with the political context of the era the works were created in."--Publisher's website
