Renaissance & reformation : German art in the age of Dürer and Cranach by Los Angeles County Museum of Art( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 268 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Featuring more than a hundred outstanding paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and treasures of the Age of the Reformation, this publication comprises masterpieces by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger, Hans Holbein the Elder and Hans Holbein the Younger, Matthias Grünewald, and Tilman Riemenschneider, among others. By placing these works in their historical context, this beautifully illustrated book uses art as a prism through which to consider the religious, social and political upheavals of the time. The volume includes insightful texts that discuss pivotal subjects such as traditional imagery and devotion, Reformation and polemics, court life and culture, humanism and reality, as well as portraiture and representation. Biographies of the artists, an extensive bibliography and a glossary of central terms concerning the German Reformation make this a comprehensive study of a fascinating period in European art history
Conflict, time, photography by Tate Britain (Londres)( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the seconds after a bomb is detonated to a former scene of battle years after a war has ended, this moving exhibition focuses on the passing of time, tracing a diverse and poignant journey through over 150 years of conflict around the world, since the invention of photography. In an innovative move, the works are ordered according to how long after the event they were created from moments, days and weeks to decades later. Photographs taken seven months after the fire bombing of Dresden are shown alongside those taken seven months after the end of the First Gulf War. Images made in Vietnam 25 years after the fall of Saigon are shown alongside those made in Nagasaki 25 years after the atomic bomb. The result is the chance to make never-before-made connections while viewing the legacy of war as artists and photographers have captured it in retrospect. The immediate trauma of war can be seen in the eyes of Don McCullin's Shell-shocked US Marine 1968, while the destruction of buildings and landscapes are documented by Simon Norfolk's Afghanistan: Chronotopia 2001. Different conflicts will also reappear from multiple points in time throughout the exhibition. The Second World War for example is addressed in Jerzy Lewczyński's 1960 photographs of the Wolf's Lair / Adolf Hitler's War Headquarters, Shomei Tomatsu's images of objects found in Nagasaki, Kikuji Kawada's epic project The Map made in Hiroshima in the 1960s, Michael Schmidt's Berlin streetscapes from 1980 and Nick Waplington's 1993 close-ups of cell walls from a Prisoner of War camp in Wales. The exhibition is staged to coincide with the 2014 centenary and concludes with new and recent projects by British, German, Polish and Syrian photographers which reflect on the First World War a century after it began.--Tate website

Benjamin Katz : Gerhard Richter at work by Benjamin Katz( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With a career spanning almost sixty years, Gerhard Richter is among the most prominent painters of the twentieth and twenty-first century, well-known for his monumental abstract and photo-realistic works. But beyond the many instantly recognizable paintings, relatively little is still known about how Richter works, his artistic processes and philosophy. For this book, Belgian photographer Benjamin Katz--a fifty-year veteran of the art world himself--had the opportunity to capture on film the notoriously camera-shy artist at work. Armed with a pair of compact Leicas, he photographed and hand-developed eighty extraordinary black-and-white portraits of Richter painting, sketching, and mulling over his work. A keen observer, Katz shoots his subjects candidly and without the use of flash. Because of this, his photographs reflect genuine moments in the lives of their subjects, often with an almost palpable sense of humor, melancholy, or love. In addition to Richter, Katz has photographed Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Rosemarie Trockel, Martin Kippenberger, and Georg Baselitz, among many other legends of the contemporary art world, exhibiting his photographs in some of the world's biggest institutions. Katz's striking photographs of Richter will be equally well-received for the insight they offer into his celebrated career."--Publisher description
Tecumseh, Keokuk, Black Hawk : Indianerbildnisse in Zeiten von Verträgen und Vertreibung : Sonderausstellung der Staatlichen Ethnographischen Sammlungen Sachsen im Albertinum Dresden, 1. Oktober 2013 bis 2. März 2014( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in German and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

De uitgever meldt over deze publicatie: "The colonisation of the world by European powers led to the production of a wealth of images of the colonised cultures and peoples. Images of North American Indians play an important role in our visual culture. This publication illuminates how they are represented, as well as their political and historico-cultural background, based on the so-called 'Indian Museum' of the Dresden sculptor Ferdinand Pettrich (1798-1872). In the 1830s, Pettrich travelled to Washington and portrayed representatives of Indian tribes in 33 reliefs, statues, busts, and bozzetti made of terracotta-coloured plaster. These tribes were negotiating treaties with the US government about the future usage of the land. The portraits were created during a decisive phase of national history, when the US government's policy towards the Native Americans was becoming increasingly hostile and the young nation was striving for further expansion and a national identity, while the native inhabitants were fighting for their physical and cultural survival. Pettrich's oeuvre is an early example of the recurring motif of North American Indians in European and Euro-American art. The classically-influenced forms of these representations, the influence of the simultaneously emerging 'Indian painting', as well as the lasting fascination of the subject of 'Indians' are presented here, along with the political context of the era the works were created in."

Shadows of time : Giambologna, Michelangelo and the Medici Chapel( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Giambologna (1529 - 1606) is regarded as the most important European sculptor between Michelangelo and Bernini. How did he achieve this status? This volume investigates this question and examines above all Giambologna's study of Michelangelo, his all-powerful role model, and how he successfully prevailed. The young Flemish artist Giambologna most probably embarked on his study trip to Rome in 1550. On his way home he visited Florence, decided to stay and became the star at the Medici court. They sent his sculptures to the princely courts of Europe, where they became sought-after gifts. Although we know a great deal about his success, we know little of his early years in Italy, because he first appeared on the scene as a sculptor from about 1560. The alabaster figures after Michelangelo's "Times of Day" in Dresden, hitherto largely ignored, seem to be early works by the master sculptor. An examination of these sculptures promises to shed fresh light on the development of a genius

Titian : Lady in white( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Titians 'Lady in White' is full of gracefulness and beauty but also full of mysteries. Speculations have always been made about the identity of the young woman. Is she the artists daughter Lavinia; is she the ideal image of feminine beauty? The essays in this publication focus in depth on this masterwork by Titian that is one of the highlights of the world famous Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden. The results of the restoration work and research carried out in recent years are presented along with the history of the origins of the Dresden Picture Gallery"--Front cover flap
Gerhard Richter : 100 self-portraits, 1993 by Gerhard Richter( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 41 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For the subscription edition of "Schriften und Interviews", that was published by Insel Verlag in 1993 in an edition of 100 copies, Richter drew a 23.5 x 17.7 cm "self-portrait" in pencil on the back of a portrait photograph at the front of the book. Enthused by his work, he produced a further 94 signed and dated self-portraits between the 3rd of September and the 12th of December 1993 on loose leaves, which are published here for the first time. It is when they are seen together as a series that this brilliant exercise becomes impressive. Despite the means of production being largely the same or similar, each instance has an individual formal and aesthetic appearance. The pencil drawings form an open series of variations, whose aspiration is not the gradual nearing of a perfected final outcome, but rather the serial testing of different, but equally weighted possibilities of representation within limited specifications. Exhibition: Albertinum, Dresden, Germany (01.06. - 26.08.2018)
Das Paradies auf Erden : Flämische Landschaften von Bruegel bis Rubens by Uta Neidhardt( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in German and held by 40 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

-- publisher's description
