"This landmark catalogue is published for the 400th anniversary of the birth of Anthony van Dyck, one of the most celebrated Flemish painters of the 17th century. Coinciding with the major exhibition of Van Dyck's paintings at the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp and the Royal Academy of Arts, London, this publication contains over 100 of Van Dyck's masterpieces, including many rarely seen works drawn from the British Royal Collection, private collections, and museums and churches in Europe and around the world." "There are full-color comparative illustrations, a chronology, and a detailed description of each work. Van Dyck : a complete catalogue of the paintings by Anthony Van Dyck ( Book )
6 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 551 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1941): a native of Antwerp, Van Dyck also lived and worked for long periods in Italy and England, where his brief, productive life ended. He is best known for his work at the court of Charles I of England and his images of Charles and his Queens, Henrietta Maria, combine imperial tradition with a lyricism that is unique. The full-length portraits of aristocrats in the Caroline court and in Genoa, Antwerp, Brussels and The Hague set a standard for elegance, grandeur and personal insight that influenced the history of Western portraiture into the twentieth century in the work of John Singer Sargent." "Like Titian, whom he admired and whose artistic legacy he transformed and handed on, Van Dyck was as gifted with religious and mythological subjects as he was with portraits. He pioneered means of expressing personal piety and intimacy that would dominate later-seventeenth- and eighteenth-century religious art throughout Catholic Europe. In his history paintings he evolved a style which owed much to Titian but also foreshadowed the rococo painters of the eighteenth century." "This catalogue raisonne includes a reproduction of every known authentic painting by the artist, the provenance and the significant facts and literature on each."--BOOK JACKET

In the spring of 1624 the painter Anthony Van Dyck (1599 -1641) moved from Genoa to Palermo in Sicily. Soon after Van Dyck's arrival, plague struck Palermo and most of the population died. In the same year, the bones of Saint Rosalia were discovered in a cave on the Monte Pellegrino where she was said to have died as a hermit in the Middle Ages. This will be the first exhibition to focus on Van Dyck's work during this period. The exhibition takes Dulwich's own Portrait of Emanuele Filiberto as a starting point and expands into an examination of Van Dyck's activity in that year. It will also be the first time in the UK that Van Dyck's portrait of the Viceroy of Sicily from Dulwich's own collection will be seen next to the spectacular suit of armour worn by the viceroy in the portrait - still surviving in the Royal Armouries of Madrid
