Amoskeag : life and work in an American factory-city by Tamara K Hareven( Book )

20 editions published between 1978 and 1995 in English and held by 1,247 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Through the prism of one turn-of-the-century factory-city, Tamara Hareven and Randolph Langenbach have captured the historic experience of millions of Americans. We hear for the first time the eloquent voices'sometimes elegiac, sometimes bitter, yet always powerful'of immigrant being turned into Americans as they worked the machines which were themselves transforming this country. The book focuses on the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, once the largest textile factory in the world. The shells of its awesome mills still extend for two miles along the Merrimack Rover in Manchester, New Hampshire. Never before have we known so vividly what it was like to live a life in the closed world of a single gigantic industrial entity, from the first moment a child set foot in a mill carrying his father's or mother's lunchpail to the moment he retired or was laid off sixty years later. Amoskeag moves through layer after layer of mill life, from the elegant world of Boston-based executives to the cramped quarters of the families of messenger boys, Boston Brahmins and Scottish weaving girls, French-Canadian dirt farmers and Irish immigrants, bosses and workers, create and unforgettable vision of shared experiences and ethnic rivalries, of company loyalty and butter strikes, of back-breaking work and momentary delights in industrializing America. Over seventy photographs, ranging from classic shots by Lewis Hine to modern portraits of the interviewees, help reconstruct the reality that was Amoskeag

Family and population in nineteenth-century America by Tamara K Hareven( Book )

15 editions published between 1978 and 2016 in English and held by 781 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Representing new approaches to the study of the family and historical demography, this collection of essays analyzes the relationships of demographic processes in different population groups to household structure and family organization, and their implications for family behavior. Emphasizing dynamic rather than structural factors, the essays thus move beyond earlier studies of family history. Essays by the editors, Richard Easterlin, George Alter, Gretchen Condran, and Stanley Engerman focus on patterns of fertility in relation to urban and industrial development, economic opportunity and the availability of land, and race and ethnic origin. The remaining essays, by Laurence Glasco, Howard Chudacoff, and John Modell, deal with family organization over time as affected by such factors as the practice of boarding, the role of kin, family budgeting strategy, and migration. The authors not only challenge the prevailing assumption that rapid urbanization is responsible for the decline in the fertility rate; they also contend that, contrary to the prevailing theories of social change, the emergence of nuclear households was not a consequence of industrialization.Originally published in 1978.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
