The question of God : C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud debate God, love, sex, and the meaning of life by Armand M Nicholi( Book )

20 editions published between 2002 and 2012 in 5 languages and held by 1,543 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Many of history's greatest thinkers have wrestled with the ultimate question of belief and nonbelief in God. Though it might seem unlikely that any new arguments could possibly be raised on either side, the twentieth century managed to produce two men who each made brilliant, new, and lasting arguments, one in favor of belief and one opposed. Few spokesmen have ever championed their respective positions better than Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis. Sadly, as far as we know, they never met or debated each other directly." "In The Question of God their arguments are placed side by side, as if they were standing at podiums in a shared room. Both thought carefully about the flaws and alternatives to their positions; each considered the other's views. Both men considered the problem of pain and suffering, the nature of love and sex, and the ultimate meaning of life and death. Here, with their debate made explicit, we can take ringside seats at one of history's most profound encounters."--Jacket

Since the publication of the last edition in 1988, remarkable advances have been made in laboratory and clinical psychiatric research; the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) has been published; managed care has radically altered the provision of all medical care; and the profession of psychiatry has come to a sophisticated new understanding of the interplay between psychiatric knowledge and issues in the larger society. All these changes are reflected in the new text. Of particular interest are the masterful and lucid reviews of current knowledge in the neurobiology of mental disorders, in the section on brain and behavior. The section on psychopathology clarifies newly emerging diagnostic categories and offers new insights into addictions, anxiety disorders, and disorders of cognition. (Midwest)

Investigation of Harvard dropouts. Final report by Armand M Nicholi( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Approximately half of the 7,000,000 students currently enrolled in college will fail to complete their education. This study investigates the causes of this high attrition rate by examining the records of 1,454 undergraduates who dropped out of Harvard College for various reasons over a 5-year period. Sources of the data were: (1) Registrar's records; (2) psychiatric records; and (3) questionnaires yielding follow-up information sent to each of the sample who had failed to return to Harvard by September 1963. Some of the major findings were: (1) 24% of each class withdraws during its 4 years in college; (2) more than 43% of the sample left for psychiatric reasons; (3) more than 700 of the students who withdrew failed to get a degree from Harvard, and 420 of these failed to get a degree from any college; (4) the majority of students gave personal or medical reasons as the primary cause for dropping out; (5) although the dropouts had high academic potential, their academic performance at the time of leaving college was poor; and (6) American blacks had a higher dropout rate than the average undergraduate. African blacks, however, had a much lower dropout rate. This report discusses in detail the differences between the psychiatric dropout and the general dropout in terms of family and school background, academic record, field of concentration and return to college. 1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

No matter what your faith, or what you believe, how each of us understands the meaning of life comes down to how we answer one ultimate question: Does God really exist? The Question of God explores, in accessible and dramatic style, issues that preoccupy all thinking people today: What is happiness? How do we find meaning and purpose in our lives? How do we reconcile conflicting claims of love and sexuality? How do we cope with the problem of suffering and the inevitability of death? Based on a popular Harvard course taught by Dr. Armand M. Nicholi, author of the book The Question of God, this program illustrates the lives and insights of Sigmund Freud, a life-long critic of religious belief, and C.S. Lewis, a celebrated Oxford don, literary critic and perhaps this century's most influential and popular proponent of faith based on reason. - Container
