Jean Rhys letters, 1931-1966 by Jean Rhys( Book )

"In her will, Jean Rhys expressed a wish that no biography of her should be written unless authorized during her lifetime. Following her death, her literary executor was approached frequently with requests for permission to write "an official life". Finally he decided that, by compiling a volume of letters, authentic biographical information would be provided. But as the collection grew, the biographical aspect took on a secondary importance as the self-portrait began to reveal the turbulent process of literary creation. The final result is a portrait spanning the years 1931 (taking up the story roughly where it was left in "Smile Please") to 1966, when the long struggle to finish "Wide Sargasso Sea" was over."--Provided by Amazon.com
Strictly ballroom : tales from the dancefloor by Diana Melly( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two years ago, at the age of 72, Diana Melly took up ballroom dancing. She was suffering from bereavement, having recently lost her husband George to dementia, and was told that dancing might help. It has done much more than that, opening up a whole new chapter in her life. Ballroom dancing turns out to be incredibly good for you - a complex activity which not only flexes unexpected muscles but rewires the brain, increasing serotonin levels and reducing stress. A recent study in America found that the only physical activity to offer protection against dementia was frequent dancing. In this delightful and gently humorous book, Diana Melly takes us on an eye-opening tour of dance halls up and down the country, introducing us to everything from tango to swing. We meet her new circle of friends: Gwen, who is in her sixties but looks 45; Scotty, whose speciality is jiving; and Raymond, her dance teacher, 'the best friend I've ever had'. And then there's the music: Sinatra, Crosby, Ella, Rogers and Hammerstein Who could ask for anything more?

Take a girl like me : life with George by Diana Melly( Book )

5 editions published between 2005 and 2016 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Once there was a girl, pretty and smart and sexy. By sixteen, she was married, by seventeen she had a child, and by eighteen she’d sent her son to live with an aunt. Before her mid-twenties, she’d acquired another child and a second husband, and life wasn’t going to plan…Then she met a man. Outrageous, brilliant, impossible, charismatic and kind, he was irresistible – sex, drugs and jazz were a heady combination for the girl from Essex. Suddenly it was the swinging sixties and she was juggling babies with one had and popping pills with the other. When George wasn’t in jazz clubs, he was fishing – and not just for fish
