Parent partners : workshops to foster school/home/family partnerships : a guide to presenting parent education workshops by Jacqueline Barber( Book )

4 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 99 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Noting that the growing concern among parents about the quality of their children's elementary science and mathematics education--reinforced by media reports on various educational controversies--contributes to a lack of understanding between teachers and parents, this book provides three parent education workshops designed to bridge the gap. The focus of the workshops is on sharing recent research and its implications for parents and caregivers, explaining the rationale for reforms in elementary science and mathematics education, and explaining approaches to testing and assessment of children's progress in these subjects. The book's introduction discusses the pressing need for parent education, outlines parents' views toward parent education, and describes how most effectively to use the workshop materials. The workshops are: (1) "How Parents Make a Difference"; (2) "How Students Learn Best"; and (3) "Testing: Knowing What Your Child Knows." Each workshop contains the following: (1) overview of workshop; (2) time frame; (3) materials list for the presenter and participants; (4) steps to prepare for and conduct the workshop; (5) workshop activities; (6) follow-up activities; (7) overhead masters; (8) take-home handouts; (9) research references; and (10) engaging messages summarizing research findings presented in the workshop. The Architecture of reform : GEMS and national standards by Cary I Sneider( Book )

5 editions published between 1997 and 2000 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The world of science education is rich with guidelines on what the science curriculum should include, but impoverished in time and money to create real programs for students that reflect these guidelines effectively. This handbook is designed to assist teachers and administrators in charting a course through the maze of new national and state standards, benchmarks, and frameworks. Part I is intended to familiarize readers with key documents in science education reform so that they can decide which documents they want to spend more time on, then move ahead in the planning process. This section, comprised of four chapters, is written from the viewpoint of an imaginary writer living in the 21st century, when the reforms have been successfully implemented. Chapter 1 puts current initiatives into historical perspective; chapter 2 describes each of the major documents; chapter 3 discusses the common vision of all of the reform programs; and chapter 4 explores the metaphor of a House of Science to represent the knowledge, abilities, and attitudes that students develop as they become scientifically literate. Part ii contains 3 chapters and relates the vision and goals of these key reform documents to the gems series. Chapter 5 describes how the gems series supports reform goals; chapter 6 discusses building a curriculum with gems units; and chapter 7 provides suggestions for engaging in local curriculum planning. This document contains five appendices which include House of Science Transparency Masters for use in presentations to the education community. (Pvd)
