Francis Bacon : a retrospective by
Dennis Farr(
Book
)
10 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 851 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book, which accompanies the first major retrospective exhibition in America of Bacon's paintings since his death in 1992, will give uninhibited voice to the thoughts of three prominent scholars of his art. Art historians Dennis Farr and Sally Yard, and Bacon's friend and biographer Michael Peppiatt discuss their views of the artist's intense and unsettling body of work, introducing a wealth of material that sheds new light on his creative life and working methods. Accompanying the essays are three historic interviews with the artist by Michael Peppiatt. Finally, Dennis Farr provides authoritative and illuminating discussion of each work in the exhibition."--Jacket

The art of Bloomsbury : Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell, and Duncan Grant by
Richard Shone(
Book
)
8 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 743 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The word Bloomsbury most often summons the novels of Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster or images of artists and intellectuals debating the hot parlor topics of 1910s and 1920s London: literary aesthetics, agnosticism, defining truth and goodness, and the ideas of Bertrand Russell, A.N. Whitehead, and G.E. Moore. But the Bloomsbury Group also played a prominent role in the development of modernist painting in Britain. The work of artists Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Roger Fry, and their colleagues was often audacious and experimental, and proved to be one of the key influences on twentieth-century British art and design. This catalogue, published to accompany a major international exhibition of the Bloomsbury painters originating at the Tate Gallery in London and traveling to the Yale Center for British Art and the Huntington Art Gallery, provides a new look at the visual side of a movement that is more generally known for its literary production. It traces the artists' development over several decades and assesses their contribution to modernism. Catalogue entries on two hundred works, all illustrated in color, bring out the chief characteristics of Bloomsbury painting--domestic, contemplative, sensuous, and essentially pacific. These are seen in landscapes, portraits, and still lifes set in London, Sussex, and the South of France, as well as in the abstract painting and applied art that placed these artists at the forefront of the avant-garde before the First World War. Portraits of family and friends--from Virginia Woolf and Maynard Keynes to Aldous Huxley and Edith Sitwell--highlight the cultural and social setting of the group. Essays by leading scholars provide further insights into the works and the changing critical reaction to them, exploring friendships and relationships both within and outside of Bloomsbury, as well as the movement's wider social, economic, and political background

George Stubbs, 1724-1806 by
George Stubbs(
Book

15 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 620 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Stubbs was for too long under-valued by the label 'Mr. Stubbs the Horse Painter'. He is now recognized as deserving an equal place with his contemporaries Gainsborough and Reynolds in the foremost rank of British art. He is the most original and searching of all animal painters, whether his subject is a broodmare and foal, a monkey, or a poodle in a punt; he is also a realistic and perceptive portraitist of human beings, as much a master of the art of class distinction in eighteenth-century England as he is of the anatomy of the horse. Above all, he is a master of design, able to translate faithful observations from nature into unforgettable images. This is by far the most fully illustrated book on Stubbs available. All the works in Tate Gallery's George Stubbs exhibition of 1984-1985 are reproduced in colour, including some which have never before been reproduced, and focusing on many fascinating details in his work."--Provided by publisher

Barbara Hepworth : a retrospective by
Penelope Curtis(
Book
)
10 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Barbara Hepworth's career spanned five decades, from 1925 to 1975. Her style moved from figuration, through geometric and organic abstraction, to the internationally acclaimed grandeur of her large-scale, post-war work. Her best known sculpture is associated with the landscape around St. Ives in Cornwall: 'I used colour and strings in many of the carvings ... The colour plunged me into the depths of water, caves or shadows deeper than the carved concavities themselves. The strings were the tension I felt between myself and the sea, the wind or the hills.'. This publication focuses on Hepworth's unique carvings. It reassesses her reputation in the light of attention recently paid to her contemporaries, Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore and offers the opportunity to look afresh at a major British artist

Nancy Rose Marshall(
Book
)
10 editions published in 1999 in English and French and held by 590 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"James Tissot (1836-1902), the wry and urbane observer of manners and fashions, painted scenes from the life of "society" that simmer with undercurrents of sexual drama. This book presents nearly a hundred paintings, prints, and watercolors from every phase of Tissot's career, including such signature paintings as The Ball on Shipboard, Hush! (The Concert), and London Visitors." "Nancy Rose Marshall and Malcolm Warner explore Tissot's themes and interests and consider the influence on his work of Charles Baudelaite's brilliant essay on the aesthetics of modernity, Le Peintre de la vie moderne. They examine how Tissot dealt with the ways of modern love in Paris and London in the later nineteenth century."--Jacket

Turner and the sublime by
Andrew Wilton(
Book
)
8 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 498 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Throughout his life Turner was profoundly influenced by the eighteenth-century aesthetic theory of the "sublime." However, as Andrew Wilton now shows, the sublime was not merely a springboard for Turner's innovations; he reinterpreted the theory with great individualism and offered it to the world as a fresh and even more far-reaching philosophy of art. The 140 illustrations, which include 32 in color, reproduce watercolors and prints that demonstrate the development of Turner's response to the sublime in areas as various as architecture, the picturesque, the "terrific," the sea, cities, mountains, and lakes. Many of the subjects have not previously been published

Edwardian opulence : British art at the dawn of the twentieth century by
Angus Trumble(
Book
)
6 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Edwardian age was as brief as the Victorian era that preceded it was long. It has been depicted as an indolent summer afternoon of imperial and elite complacency, but also as a period of rapid political, economic, and artistic change, culminating in the First World War. This magnificent book explores themes of power, nostalgia, and a contrasting lightness of touch that characterized the period. Issues of creation, consumption, and display are examined through a range of objects, including portraits by Sargent and Boldini, diamond tiaras and ostrich-feather fans, jewel-like Autochrome color photography, and a spectacular embroidered gown that belonged to the American-born Vicereine of India. Spanning divides of class and geography, this book identifies opulence and leisure as driving forces for the domestic and imperial British economic engine in the early years of the 20th century

The works depict such landmarks as St. Paul's Cathedral, Somerset House, and Westminster Bridge as well as inventive scenes in which the artist playfully reorganizes a view or places a familiar element in an unexpected location."--Jacket

William Hodges 1744-1797 : the art of exploration by
William Hodges(
Book
)
6 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 383 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
William Hodges is well known as the artist who accompanied Cook's second voyage to the South Pacific as official landscape painter. This book--a major reappraisal of his career and reputation--presents him as one of the most intriguing and controversial painters of his age. Foremost scholars consider Hodges's work in terms of the rise of ethnology, the investigation of Indian history, the encounter with peoples "without history," and the development of empirical science and rationalism. Previous accounts of Hodges have often treated him secondarily to Cook and the history of geographical exploration. This volume redresses this situation in the light of recent developments in the history of eighteenth-century British art, which seek to understand art and aesthetics within a broader framework of social and imperial history
