The basic communication course in a college for the hearing impaired by Shirley C Jordan( Book )

1 edition published in 1986 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Gallaudet College provides education for preschool age through adult hearing impaired persons. Because of the lack of clear and continuous communication during their developing years, students who come to the school have not learned the English language well and have had communication problems most of their lives. To address these problems, undergraduate students must take five hours of classes in the Department of Communication Arts, including "Communication Processes and the Hearing Impaired, ""Public Speaking" or "Group Discussion," and one additional course within the department curriculum. The subject matter taught in the communication processes class, coming from both speech communication and audiology, covers communication as an academic discipline, why and how people communicate, what hearing impairment is, the modes of communication used by the hearing impaired, and how communication skills relate to hearing loss and how both relate to the communication process. The public speaking course includes a traditional emphasis on skill development in researching and recording speech material, outlining and organizing information, using appropriate style, acquiring confidence and effectiveness in delivery, and listening actively and critically. The group discussion course shares these objectives but focuses on problem-solving discussions and public discussion. Though the communication courses at Gallaudet emphasize the needs of the hearing impaired, they share many of the same goals and characteristics of similar courses at other schools. (Srt)
The Way it was, all the way : a documentary accounting by Robert Tarbell Oliver( Book )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The theme explored in this personal narrative is that of the life of a rhetorician, in writing and in speech. The narrative muses about what goes into the making of a rhetorician, questioning whether it might be ritualized education, proceeding along lines of traditional methodology, or whether it could be informal education, hit-or-miss, with its nature neither clearly nor cleanly defined--the question is whether the manner of education makes a difference. The narrative contends that education is of various kinds, whether in school or out. Besides the personal details of a long life, it is hoped that vital revelations of ways in which rhetoric and public affairs interrelate will emerge. The narrative recounts the public affairs dealings with the small nation of Korea while it was the storm center of world controversies; it illustrates a rhetoric constantly on call, serving both as weapon and shield. The narrative brings documentary evidence to the witness chair to show historic decisions balanced between opportunities and disaster. (Nka)
Kenneth Burke's Philosophy of Rhetoric: Modern, Postmodern, and Beyond by David Cratis Williams( Book )

1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This paper argues that, while Kenneth Burke may be placed by some writers squarely in either the modern or the postmodern tradition, Burke participates in both but is marginal to each, and thus "beyond" them. The first section briefly traces the outline of Burke's philosophy of rhetoric. With that framework as a backdrop, the second section examines Burke's relationship to the modernist movements in aesthetics and criticism, and the third section examines his relationship to the postmodern movements. The final section suggests that "Burkology" is containable by neither and that it offers a "corrective" to both modernism and postmodernism. Twenty-six references are attached. (Sr)
