This is the second sourcebook that has been produced by members of the Council of Elementary Science International (CESI) in cooperation with the ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education. This sourcebook is focused on activities designed to enhance children's thinking. Activities emphasizing creativity, inventiveness, visual thinking, and problem solving have been made available to teachers so the activities can be easily incorporated into the teacher's lesson plans. Each activity includes the title, focus (a short description of the concepts and/or skills developed by the activity), challenge or problem posed to students, background information (if needed), a list of materials, suggestions for implementation, further challenges, and references. Teaching Elementary Science With Toys. CESI Sourcebook VII by Linda Comp Forschauer( Book )

1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

By playing with toys, children sometimes wonder how and why toys do what they do. At the moment of curiosity, interest can be captured and thinking can be influenced. This is a good time to focus on natural phenomena, provoke imagination, and promote scientific thinking. This book presents 53 classroom-tested activities to teach science with toys. Each activity has two components: (1) the science content to be understood; and (2) the "sciencing" of the activity--children doing, recording, expressing ideas, verifying ideas, participating in further investigations, working with others, etc. The activities in the book contain the following information: Focus, Challenge, Materials, Resources, Safety Note, Advance Preparation, Time, Procedure, Further Challenges, and References. This book also contains a bibliography of books for teachers and tips for inventing and designing toys. (PR)

Physical Science Activities for Elementary and Middle School. Cesi Sourcebook V. an Occasional Sourcebook of the Council for Elementary Science International by Mark R., Comp Malone( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mounting research evidence has shown that an activity centered approach to elementary and middle school science education can be quite effective. This sourcebook, developed for teachers by teachers, presents many activity oriented science lessons that could be done in any elementary or middle school classroom with minimal additional experience. Nearly all lessons use materials that could easily be found around most schools or homes or that could be purchased inexpensively from local sources. Each activity contains the focus of the activity, a challenge posed to the students, materials, procedures, further challenges and references. Topics include: teaching physical science activities; sound; light and color; electricity from static to circuits; electricity from magnetism to generators; forces and motion; simple machines; heat; forces in liquids and gases; matter; chemistry; and space. Numerous line drawings illustrate the activities. (Cw)
