Studies of the crystal structure and ionic transport in materials containing beta alumina and related phases are reported. Beta alumina has the nominal formula MAl11O17, where M is Li, Na, K, NH4, Ag, or Tl. The structure of the adjacent M2O-rich phase was studied and found to have an analogous structure consisting of dense blocks with the gamma alumina structure separated by low-density bridging layers containing M ions. Unusually rapid ionic transport along these bridging layers was found, and defect models appropriate to such systems discussed. (Author)

Electrochemical Performance of Lithium-Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors based on Activated Carbon and Nanoplatelet Li4Ti5O12 Insertion Electrode Synthesized by Nanoscission Technique( )

ABSTRACT: Electrochemical performance of hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) utilizing surface sculpted Li4 Ti5 O12 (LTO) insertion electrode having nanoplatelet-like morphology and activated carbon (AC) electrode is investigated for energy storage application. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) at variable scan rates 0.5 to 60 mV.s -1 in the 0-3.2 V range show pseusocapacitive behavior and fast rate of current change indicating rapid Faradaic kinetics. Nyquist impedance study show charge transfer resistance due to kinetic effects of electron transfer and Li + de-intercalation process at the LTO anode. Low capacity (0.2 C-1C) charge-discharge (CD) curves show high Coulomb efficiency with marginal reduction at high 5-10 C rates due to irreversibility of adsorbed PF6 anions at the electrolyte-AC interface. Galvanostatic CD cycling tests over 50 cycles at different C-rates show decline in storage capacity due to electrode polarization effects. Reduction, broadening and shift of the Raman line at 678 cm -1 from Ti-O bonds in TiO6 octahedra after cycling indicates Li insertion reactions in functioning of hybrid supercapacitor. The hybrid supercapacitor cells have shown energy density, 29 Wh.kg -1 and power density, 350 W.kg -1

Identifying the chemical and structural irreversibility in LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 - a model compound for classical layered intercalation1( )

Abstract : Anisotropic disorder along the c -axis results from static disorder. Abstract : In this work, we extracted 95% of the electrochemically available Li from LiNi0.8 Co0.15 Al0.05 O2 (NCA) by galvanostatically charging the NCA/MCMB full cell to 4.7 V. Joint powder X-ray and neutron diffraction (XRD & ND) studies were undertaken for NCA at highly charged states at the first cycle, and discharged states at different cycles. The results indicate that the bulk structure of NCA maintains the O3 structure up to the extraction of 0.90 Li per formula unit. In addition, we found that the transition metal layer becomes more disordered along the c -axis than along the a - and b -axes upon charging. This anisotropic disorder starts to develop no later than 4.3 V on charge and continues to grow until the end of charge. As Li is re-inserted during discharge, the structure that resembles the pristine NCA is recovered. The irreversible loss of Li and the migration of Ni to the Li layer have been quantified by the joint XRD and ND refinement and the results were further verified by solid state 7 Li NMR and magnetic measurements. Our work clearly demonstrates that the NCA bulk retains a robust, single phase O3 structure throughout the wide delithiation range (up to 0.9 Li per formula unit of NCA) and is suitable for higher energy density usage with proper modifications
