Delirious New York : a retroactive manifesto for Manhattan by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

57 editions published between 1978 and 2014 in English and held by 1,164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since its original publication in 1978, Delirious New York has attained mythic status. Back in print in a newly designed edition, this influential cultural, architectural, and social history of New York is even more popular, selling out its first printing on publication. Rem Koolhaas's celebration and analysis of New York depicts the city as a metaphor for the incredible variety of human behavior. At the end of the nineteenth century, population, information, and technology explosions made Manhattan a laboratory for the invention and testing of a metropolitan lifestyle -- "the culture of congestion"--And its architecture. "Manhattan," he writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta Stone ... occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Koolhaas interprets and reinterprets the dynamic relationship between architecture and culture in a number of telling episodes of New York's history, including the imposition of the Manhattan grid, the creation of Coney Island, and the development of the skyscraper. Delirious New York is also packed with intriguing and fun facts and illustrated with witty watercolors and quirky archival drawings, photographs, postcards, and maps. The spirit of this visionary investigation of Manhattan equals the energy of the city itself."
Small, medium, large, extra-large : Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Rem Koolhaas, and Bruce Mau by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

14 editions published between 1995 and 1998 in English and held by 769 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This massive book is a novel about architecture. Conceived by Rem Koolhaas ... and Bruce Mau ... as a free-fall in the space of the typographic imagination, the book's title ... is also its framework: projects and essays are arranged according to scale. The book combines essays, manifestoes, diaries, fairy tales, travelogues, a cycle of meditations on the contemporary city, with work produced by Koolhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture over the past twenty years. This accumulation of words and images illuminates the condition of architecture today, its splendors and miseries, exploring and revealing the corrosive impact of politics, context, the economy, globalization, the world"--Back cover

Project Japan : metabolism talks-- by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

18 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Once there was a nation that went to war, but after they conquered a continent their own country was destroyed by atom bombs ... then the victors imposed democracy on the vanquished. For a group of apprentice architects, artists, and designers, led by a visionary, the dire situation of their country was not an obstacle but an inspiration to plan and think ... although they were very different characters, the architects worked closely together to realize their dreams, staunchly supported by a super-creative bureaucracy and an activist state ... after 15 years of incubation, they surprised the world with a new architecture--Metabolism--that proposed a radical makeover of the entire land ... Then newspapers, magazines, and TV turned the architects into heroes: thinkers and doers, thoroughly modern men ..."--Page [4] de la couv

Rem Koolhaas : conversations with students by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

17 editions published between 1991 and 2007 in English and Spanish and held by 307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book presents a lecture and seminar given by architect Rem Koolhaas at the Rice University School of Architecture. In this compact volume, Koolhaas addresses the urban and architectural implications of extra-large construction, using as examples three of the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)'s important large-scale projects: the Zeebrugge Ferry Terminal in Belgium, the Tres Grande Bibliotheque in Paris, and the Karlsruhe Center for Art and Media Technology in Germany. Tackling questions about the difficult state of urbanism and modernism in contemporary Europe, America, and Asia, this volume forms a concise and coherent explanation of the theories and polemics of Koolhaas and OMA. Thie book serves as an inexpensive alternative and companion to Koolhaas's S, M, L, XL."--Publisher's description

Six canonical projects by Rem Koolhaas : essays on the history of ideas by Ingrid Böck( Book )

11 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 254 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Rem Koolhaas has been part of the international avant-garde since the nineteen-seventies and has been named the Pritzker Architecture Prize for the year 2000. This book, which builds on six canonical Koolhaas projects, traces the discursive practice behind the design methods used by Koolhaas and his office OMA. It uncovers recurring key themes-such as wall, void, montage, trajectory, infrastructure, and shape-that have structured this design discourse over the span of Koolhaas's oeuvre. The book moves beyond the six core pieces, as well: It explores how these identified thematic design principles manifest in other works by Koolhaas as both practical re-applications and further elaborations. In addition to Koolhaas's individual genius, these textual and material layers are accounted for shaping the very context of his work's relevance. By comparing the design principles with relevant concepts from the architectural Zeitgeist in which Koolhaas has operated, the study moves beyond its specific subject-Rem Koolhaas-and provides novel insight into the broader history of architectural ideas."--Publisher

In a surprising and novel remaking, the project reconstructs "Live in Your Head. When Attitudes Become Form," a show curated by Harald Szeemann at the Bern Kunsthalle in 1969, which went down in history for the curator's radical approach to exhibition practice, conceived as a linguistic medium."--See more at:

Preservation is overtaking us by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

15 editions published between 2014 and 2016 in English and held by 175 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Preservation is Overtaking Us brings together two lectures given by Rem Koolhaas at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, along with a response (framed as a supplement to the original lectures) by Jorge Otero-Pailos. In the first essay Koolhaas describes alternative strategies for preserving Beijing, China. The second talk marks the inaugural Paul Spencer Byard lecture, named in celebration of the longtime professor of Historic Preservation at GSAPP. These two lectures trace key moments of Koolhaas' thinking on preservation, including his practice's entry into China and the commission to redevelop the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. In a format well known to Koolhaas' readers, Otero-Pailos reworks the lectures into a working manifesto, using it to interrogate OMA's work from within the discipline of preservation
Delirious New York : ein retroaktives Manifest für Manhattan by Rem Koolhaas( Book )

32 editions published between 1978 and 2015 in 12 languages and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The city in the city : Berlin : a green archipelago by O. M Ungers( Book )

12 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and German and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the manifesto 'The City in the City - Berlin: A Green Archipelago', Oswald Mathias Ungers and a number of his colleagues from Cornell University presented the first concepts and intellectual models for the shrinking city. In contrast to the reconstruction of the European city that was popular at the time, they developed the figure of a polycentric urban landscape. However, the manifesto really began to exert an effect beginning in the 1990s onwards, when the focus of the urban planning discourse turned to the examination of crises, recessions, and the phenomenon of demographic shrinking. This critical edition contains a previously unpublished version of the manifesto by Rem Koolhaas, as well as interviews with co-authors Rem Koolhaas, Peter Riemann, Hans Kollhoff, and Arthur Ovaska. Introductory texts explain the development of the manifesto between Cornell and Berlin, position the work in the planning history of Berlin, and reveal its influence on current approaches
