Scars of war, wounds of peace the Israeli-Arab tragedy by Shlomo Ben-Ami( )
27 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in English and held by 2,266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book is about the fluctuating movement of Arabs and Israelis between war and peace, in one of the most protracted conflicts of modern times. It is written by a professional historian who was also a major participant at key points of the peace process, in particular the Camp David summit with President Clinton in 2000." "This analytical account encompasses the major crossroads of the Arab-Israeli story, starting with the clash of Jewish and Palestinian nationalism (1936-39). Vividly portraying the main actors in the Arab-Israeli drama, the book takes us through the Israeli War of Independence, and the abortive attempts at peacemaking that followed it, to the Sinai campaign of 1956, the rout of the Arab armies in the Six Day War and the failure of the Israelis - hostage to their own overwhelming hubris - to exploit the opportunities for peace that emerged after the war. Identifying the Yom Kippur War and the ascendency of America in the 1970s as the watershed that inaugurated the peace process, the author goes on to follow the tortuous quest for peace through its major landmarks: Camp David, the Madrid peace conference, the glory and the agony of Oslo, and the eventual collapse of the peace process into the Al-Aqsa Intifada. The final chapters deal with the impact of President Bush's War on Terror on the chances of an Arab-Israeli peace."--BOOK JACKET

Ethnic challenges to the modern nation state by Prof Shlomo Ben-Ami( )
18 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 573 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
At the dawn of the third millennium, the most important form of political organization in the twentieth century, the nation-state, is coming under a great deal of pressure from restive ethnic groups that reside within its boundaries. The fourteen original essays in this volume analyse some of the challenges to the nation-state, and to modernity itself, posed by the revival of ethnic identities and ethnic conflicts. Issues such as multiculturalism, language policy, politicized religious fundamentalism and ethnic protest are examined theoretically from philosophical, political and sociological perspectives. These theoretical considerations are presented both in special theoretical essays and in the context of case studies pertaining to three types of states: industrialized, liberal states in Western Europe, settler states in America, Africa and the Middle East, and post-colonial states in Asia and Africa. Contributors to this volume come from leading universities in Israel, Europe and North America and from several academic disciplines: history, philosophy, political science, sociology and geography

This house believes Britain's role in the Middle East is in terminal decline ( Visual )
1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
On the eve of crucial Middle East peace talks in Annapolis, a special Doha Debates held in the UK examined Britain's role and influence in the region. During the debate held at the world-famous Cambridge Union on November 26th, 2007 a former Israeli foreign minister accused Britain of feeling its way in the dark in the Middle East and dismissed prime minister Gordon Brown's policy as "a state of confusion." Shlomo Ben-Ami, a leading player in the last Camp David peace talks, told the audience that "Britain's Middle East role has been taken over by the United States." Mr. Ben-Ami made the comments while supporting the motion 'This House believes Britain's role in the Middle East is in terminal decline.' His co-speaker for the motion, Liberal Democrat Baroness Kishwar Falkner slammed what she called Britain's lost credibility in the aftermath of the Iraq war. "Britain is at best irrelevant, at worst incompetent, and at the very least in decline," she said. Former UK Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind disagreed. He argued that Britain continues to have influence in the Middle East despite what he called "gross mistakes in Iraq". Joining him to argue against the motion, leading Arab commentator Raghida Dergham said that Britain still had the opportunity to influence events in the Middle East - but it was up to the British government whether it chose to use it
