A Picasso anthology : documents, criticism, reminiscences by Marilyn McCully( Book )

27 editions published between 1981 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 946 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This collection of critical and personal reactions to Picasso at every stage of his career provides a remarkable account of the many innovations and changes of direction which baffled his contemporaries. Picasso's working methods and his attitudes to his own art are also revealed in conversations and in letters and statements by his closest friends." "A Picasso Anthology contains a wide range and variety of contemporary responses to Picasso and his art. There are essential passages from books by his close friends, including Apollinaire, Cocteau, and Roland Penrose; there is an important body of Catalan and Spanish criticism; a remarkable collection of Russian criticism of his cubist work; and Czech, Danish, and Italian articles, as well as mainstream texts from France and Germany."--Jacket
Picasso : painter and sculptor in clay by Pablo Picasso( Book )

22 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 682 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is without question one of the most important and revolutionary artists of the twentieth century. Surprisingly, however, his work in ceramics - which consists of several thousand pieces - has never been thoroughly surveyed. This volume reveals for the first time how painted and sculpted works in clay formed a vital part of Picasso's output during the last decades of his life, and how these works are intimately related to his art in other mediums." "During his lifetime Picasso kept most of his ceramics in his studio, and the limited-edition copies that were made gave little hint of their quality and extraordinary variety. With this book, which accompanies a major international exhibition and includes both preparatory drawings and photographs of the artist at work, Picasso's ceramics assume their rightful place in his legacy, and give a whole new dimension to the artistic activity of his later years."--Jacket

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is acknowledged as one of the greatest draftsmen of the 20th century. "Picasso's Drawings, 1890-1921" follows the dazzling development of his drawing practice from the precocious academic exercises of his youth to his renewal of classicism in his virtuoso output of the early 1920s. A selection of more than seventy works on paper, with extended entries, highlights his stylistic experiments and techniques during this roughly thirty-year period, which begins and ends in a classical mode and encompasses his most radical innovations

Picasso in Paris 1900-1907 by Marilyn McCully( Book )

25 editions published in 2011 in 4 languages and held by 328 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1900, at around the time of his nineteenth birthday, Pablo Picasso went to Paris to visit the Universal Exhibition and to have his first experience of the art capital of the world. His training had been in provincial Spanish art schools, but the following year he was offered a large exhibition at the prestigious Vollard Gallery and he became familiar with the bohemian district of Montmartre and its gaudy pleasures. Yet only a few years later he was challenging Matisse for the position of leader of the French avant-garde and was set on his revolutionary path as a universal artist. This book follows Picasso’s discovery of art and life in the French capital and examines his response to specific artists, including Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen, Puvis de Chavannes, Rodin, and Cézanne. He soon began to forge a personal style, drawing on the process of painting itself, which blurred the traditional distinctions between imitation and reality, culminating in perhaps the most seminal painting of the twentieth century, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon."--Publisher's description

Becoming Picasso : Paris 1901 by Courtauld Institute Galleries( Book )

6 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1901 was a momentous and turbulent year for the nineteen-year-old Picasso. His first visit to Paris, at the end of 1900, had fuelled his ambitions and led to the prospect of an exhibition with one of the city's most important modern art dealers, Ambroise Vollard. As he prepared work for the show he received news that his closest friend, Carles Casagemas, had committed suicide. The tragedy would have a profound impact upon his art as the year unfolded. Picasso left for Paris in May with around 20 paintings and little over a month to produce enough work to fill his Vollard exhibition. Once there, he painted unstintingly, sometimes finishing three canvases in a single day. This great outpouring of creative energy resulted in more than 60 paintings for the exhibition. The canvases express Picasso's desire to take on and reinvent the styles and motifs of his artist heroes, such as Van Gogh, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec
