Sexual harassment of working women : a case of sex discrimination by Catharine A MacKinnon( Book )

20 editions published between 1976 and 1999 in 3 languages and held by 1,490 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A comprehensive legal theory is needed to prevent the persistence of sexual harassment. Although requiring sexual favors as a quid pro quo for job retention or advancement clearly is unjust, the task of translating that obvious statement into legal theory is difficult. To do so, one must define sexual harassment and decide what the law's role in addressing harassment claims should be. In Sexual Harassment of Working Women, ' Catharine Mac-Kinnon attempts all of this and more. In making a strong case that sexual harassment is sex discrimination and that a legal remedy should be available for it, the book proposes a new standard for evaluating all practices claimed to be discriminatory on the basis of sex. Although MacKinnon's "inequality" theory is flawed and its implications are not considered sufficiently, her formulation of it makes the book a significant contribution to the literature of sex discrimination. MacKinnon calls upon the law to eliminate not only sex dis- crimination but also most instances of sexism from society. She uses traditional theories in an admittedly strident manner, and relies upon both traditional and radical-feminist sources. The results of her effort are mixed. The book is at times fresh and challenging, at times needlessly provocative. -- https://www.jstor.org (Sep. 30, 2016)

"Toward a Feminist Theory of the State presents Catharine MacKinnon's powerful analysis of politics, sexuality, and the law from the perspective of women. Sex Equality, third edition, comprehensively updates and analyzes the legal doctrine and social concept of sex equality in theoretical, comparative, international, historical, and social scientific context. Together with the relative situation of women and men, detailed attention is given throughout to racism, the treatment of Native peoples, economic class, sexual orientation, and transgender status. Centered on U.S. legal cases, the book maps and interrogates the traditional approach to sex discrimination based on sameness and difference and develops a theory of substantive equality based on hierarchy as well. Materials on race, work, education, athletics, and pregnancy are included. An updated chapter on burdens of proof equips the litigator with basic technical tools in critical perspective. Expanding sex equality concepts, including arguments gaining increasing recognition, the law of the family, rape, sexual harassment in work and education, gay and lesbian rights, reproductive issues including abortion and surrogacy, prostitution, and pornography are thoroughly explored in light of contemporary cultural, legal, and transnational developments and controversies. This volume provides detailed information on inequality between the sexes, an expert grasp of the legal and conceptual tools of sex equality in its manifold dimensions, and visions of future possibilities.--
Butterfly politics by Catharine A MacKinnon( Book )

6 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The theme of this book is intervening in the process of social change through legal change. The book consists of 28 chapters with introductory and concluding essays by Catharine MacKinnon. All develop the author's signature theme: that one cannot think that the way the law approaches things is all there is to knowing about them. The focus of the argument is that some wrongs (to women) may not yet be intelligible as legal wrongs, and that social problems (of oppression) may yet have no adequate legal approach. The collection makes an ideal introduction to the writing and thinking of this foremost legal scholar"--

Sexual politics by Kate Millett( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sexual Politics laid the foundation for subsequent feminist scholarship by showing how cultural discourse reflects a systematized subjugation and exploitation of women. Millett demonstrates in detail how patriarchy's attitudes and systems penetrate literature, philosophy, psychology, and politics. Her incendiary work rocked the foundations of the literary canon by castigating time-honored classics - from D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover to Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead - for their use of sex to degrade and undermine women." "A new introduction to this edition draws attention to some of the forms patriarchy has taken recently in consolidating its oppressive and dangerous control."--Jacket
