From the heart of the Crow country : the Crow Indians' own stories by Joseph Medicine Crow( Book )

10 editions published between 1992 and 2000 in English and held by 1,026 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Joseph Medicine Crow, respected elder of the Crow tribe, draws on more than sixty years of story collecting to offer readers this extraordinary look at American Indian culture from the Indian point of view. In his early boyhood, Joe Medicine Crow had the good fortune to have known many pre-reservation Crows. His grandfathers, Medicine Crow and Yellowtail, both leaders of the Crow tribe, were ceremonial traditionalists who often invited their fellow men to sweat baths, at which times many stories were told. Young Joseph would sit quietly and listen. He was further exposed to the stories of the Indian wars while growing up in the same home with White-Man Runs Him, one of Custer's six Crow scouts. Thus was born a passion for recording stories and collecting data on Crow culture - a collection that stretches from the buffalo-hunting days of men born before the Civil War up to the present day. Few Native Americans alive today can provide such a compelling and authentic window into a way of life that ended more than a century ago. As the first Crow Indian to graduate from college and earn a master's degree, Joe Medicine Crow combines oral tradition and the written record to compile a history of the Northern Plains tribes that is unique in the American Indian community

In Native Spirit, Cree Indian actress Tantoo Cardinal (Dances with Wolves), transports the viewer to the days of Red Cloud when, "Our old men talked with spirits and made good medicine. Our young men herded the horses and made love to the girls. In this way we lived and were happy". The voices of Plenty Coup, Fools Crow, Black Elk and other great leaders of their day, convey the heartbreaking story of their people's oppression and their ultimate triumph of the spirit. In Sun Dance Way, the words of Thomas Yellowtail, a revered Sun Dance chief of the Crow Indian tribe, are brought to life by the internationally known Cree Indian actor, Gordon Tootoosis (Legends of the Fall). Unique photographs and video footage of Sun Dances, from as far back as 1903, reveal the symbolism and mystical beauty of the ancient ceremony which remains at the center of the Plains Indians' lives today

Picture a Crow Indian elder, his wizened eyes catching yours in the ancient flicker of firelight. His mesmerizing stories span the ages, from Custer to World War II to the 21st Century. He is the last traditional chief of his people. He is over 90 years old. Now picture that same man lecturing at colleges nationwide, and addressing the United Nations on the subject of peace. National Geographic presents the amazing life story of Joseph Medicine Crow, the man who begins life as Winter Man. Trained as a warrior by his grandfather, Yellowtail, he bathes in icy rivers and endures the ceremony of "counting coup"--Facing fierce combat with an enemy Sioux boy. An operation at the local hospital brings the young Crow face-to-face with his worst fears: a Sioux, a ghost, and a white man. He excels at the white man's school and is raised in the Baptist faith. He translates the stories of the elder chiefs, becoming the link to the ancient traditions of the pre-reservation generation. His own dramatic and funny stories span both ages, and the ancient Crow legends are passed on in the storytelling tradition. Joseph Medicine Crow's doctorate degree was interrupted by the call to arms of World War II. On the battlefields of Germany he earned the ancient status of War Chief by completing the four war deeds required of the Crow warrior. In 1948 the Crow Tribal Council appointed Joseph Medicine Crow (now called High Bird) their Tribal Historian and Anthropologist. Counting Coup is a vibrant adventure narrative, bringing Native American history and culture alive for young readers. Joseph Medicine Crow's story illuminates the challenges faced by the Crow people as hurricanes of change raged through America. His epic story and its lessons are an essential legacy for us all
