From hardtack to home fries : an uncommon history of American cooks and meals by Barbara Haber( Book )

6 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 919 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As any cook knows, every meal, and every diet, has a story--whether it relates to presidents and first ladies or to the poorest of urban immigrants. Cultural historian Haber has spent years excavating stories of the ways in which meals cooked and served by women have shaped American history. This book brings together the best of those stories, from the 1840s to the present, focusing on a remarkable assembly of little-known or forgotten Americans who determined what our country ate during some of its most trying periods. Women's work and women's roles in America's past have not always been easy to recover. Haber's secret weapon is the cookbook. She unearths cookbooks and menus from rich and poor, urban and rural, long-past and near-present. She shows us that a single, ubiquitous lens can illuminate a great deal of this other half of our past. Includes sample recipes and photographs.--From publisher description

From Betty Crocker to feminist food studies : critical perspectives on women and food( Book )

6 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 454 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In recent years, scholars from a variety of disciplines have turned their attention to food to gain a better understanding of history, culture, economics, and society. The emerging field of food studies has yielded a great deal of useful research and a host of publications. Missing, however, has been a focused effort to use gender as an analytic tool. This stimulating collection of original essays addresses that oversight, investigating the important connections between food studies and women's studies. Applying the insights of feminist scholarship to the study of food, the thirteen essays in this volume are arranged under four headings--the marketplace, histories, representations, and resistances. The editors open the book with a substantial introduction that traces the history of scholarly writing on food and maps the terrain of feminist food studies. In the essays that follow, contributors pay particular attention to the ways in which gender, race, ethnicity, class, colonialism, and capitalism have both shaped and been shaped by the production and consumption of food
