Touch by Tiffany Field( Book )

4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 1,032 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first sensory input in life comes from the sense of touch while a baby is still in the womb, and touch continues to be the primary means of learning about the world throughout infancy, well into childhood. Touch is critical for children's growth, development, and health, as well as for adults' physical and mental well-being. Yet American society, claims Tiffany Field, is dangerously touch-deprived." "Field, a leading authority on touch and touch therapy, begins this book with an overview of the sociology and anthropology of touching and the basic psychophysical properties of touch. She then reports recent research results on the value of touch therapies, such as massage therapy, for various conditions, including asthma, cancer, autism, and eating disorders. She emphasizes the need for a change in societal attitudes toward touching, particularly among those who work with children."--Jacket

In the late 1960s, after a period of intense acceleration of the pace of research on human infancy, a number of investigators - some anthropologists, some psychologists, some psychiatrists and paediatricians, and even a few ethologists - developed the conviction that certain contributions to the understanding of infancy would come from, and perhaps only come from, cross-cultural and cross-population studies. This book, originally published in 1981, represents part of the first fruit of that conviction, and its impressive range of chapters justifies not only the belief itself but also the severa

Complementary and alternative therapies research by Tiffany Field( Book )

13 editions published between 2009 and 2015 in English and held by 331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Psychologists and other health practitioners frequently work with patients whose symptoms only partially respond to traditional therapies. Other patients may have been diagnosed with a medical illness and need help coping with both the illness and its treatment. In these and other cases, therapists may wish to consider interventions from among those collectively known as complementary and alternative therapies. This book describes the most common complementary and alternative therapies that have empirical support from peer-reviewed journals and provides guidance on which therapies have been most useful for which psychological and medical issues. In chapters that cover massage and acupressure, acupuncture, Tai Chi, yoga, exercise, hypnosis, meditation, and other therapies, the author documents the positive emotional, behavioral, physiological, and biochemical effects of these therapies as well as proposed mechanisms of change. Additional information is provided on how complementary and alternative therapies can be used in conjunction with traditional therapies. Although focused primarily on adults, the book offers data and guidance on pediatric populations as well. Clear information on the training and credentials of complementary and alternative therapy practitioners is provided as well as contact information for professional associations, so psychotherapists can have confidence in making referrals to and working with these other practitioners. The information is easily accessible to graduate students and medical students as well as novice and seasoned clinicians and researchers"--Jacket.
