Moral imagination and management decision-making by Patricia Hogue Werhane( )

13 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 1,531 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Why do good people do ethically questionable things? Why do reputable businesses ignore the harmful consequences of their actions? These questions continue to challenge philosophers, legal scholars, and corporate leaders. In this book, Patricia Werhane sets forth a model that explains ethical failings in business and shows how to transcend them. What is missing, according to Werhane, is a highly developed moral imagination that enables managers and the companies they run to be aware of, evaluate, and change the mental models that often constrict business behavior. The development of moral imagination is not identified merely with increased sensitivity to the existence of ethical issues in business. It includes awareness of the mind-sets that govern managerial and corporate decision-making, the development of reasoning skills to evaluate and moderate these mind-sets, and creativity to ponder viable alternative solutions to what appear to be insoluble economic dilemmas

Cutting-edge issues in business ethics : continental challenges to tradition and practice by Mollie Painter-Morland( )

21 editions published between 2008 and 2010 in English and held by 529 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume is one of the very few publications dedicated to the challenges that Continental philosophy poses to the field of Business Ethics. The authors want to draw attention to the work of Continental philosophers who have been relegated to the fringes of Business Ethics scholarship, and present some critical perspectives that have been ignored within Business Ethics practice. As such, this volume provides a critique of many of the assumptions that underpin traditional approaches to Business Ethics, and urges its readership to rethink moral agency and epistemology, as well as Business Ethics pedagogy."--BOOK JACKET
Leadership, gender, and organization by Patricia Hogue Werhane( )

15 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 434 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This text provides perspectives on the way in which gender plays a role in leadership dynamics and ethics within organizations. We are also interested in understanding how women engage in other forms of social organization, i.e. organization that goes beyond, or operates outside of formal institutions or assigned positions of authority. This text seeks to explore new theoretical models for thinking about leadership and organizational influence. Most studies of women{u2019}s leadership draw on an ethics of care as characteristic of the way women lead, but as such, it tends towards essentialist gender stereotypes and does little to explain the complex systemic variables that influence the functioning of women within organizations. This book moves beyond the canon in exploring alternative paradigms for thinking about leadership and gender in organizations, and about the role women play in organization, understood here also as a verb, not just a noun. The authors draw on the literature available in systems thinking, systemic leadership, and gender theory to offer alternative perspectives for thinking about the ways women lead. The book offers invaluable theoretical perspectives and insightful narratives to graduate students and researchers who are interested in women{u2019}s leadership, gender and organization. It will be of interest to all women in leadership positions, but specifically to those interested in understanding the systemic nature of leadership

6 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 382 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This thought-provoking history of corporate responsibility in the USA is a landmark publication documenting the story of corporate power and business behavior from the mid-eighteenth century to the modern day. It shows how the idea of corporate responsibility has evolved over time, with the roles, responsibilities and performance of corporations coming increasingly under the spotlight as new norms of transparency and accountability emerge. Today, it is expected that a corporation will be transparent in its operations; that it will reflect ethical values that are broadly shared by others in society; and that companies will enable society to achieve environmental sustainability as well as a high standard of living. As we enter the second decade of the twenty-first century, the social, political and economic landscape is once again shifting: the need for an informed public conversation about what is expected of the modern corporation has never been greater"--

The global corporation : sustainable, effective and ethical practices : a case book by Laura Pincus Hartman( Book )

11 editions published between 2009 and 2013 in English and held by 258 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This text brings together case studies focusing on specific instances of corporate best practices. All too often, we highlight cases based on questionable or unethical corporate behavior. Instead, the editors bring together in this book examples of how some firms got it right. Certainly, there is no claim that the companies in these cases are perfect, but these are companies that work to foster trust, both internally and in their relationships with customers, suppliers, shareholders, and the communities in which they operate. The editors conclude with an analysis of frameworks for corporate and managerial ethical decision-making-frameworks that help to establish models for best practices. These frameworks then can be generalized and applied to other corporate situations, and replicated be other companies in their search for excellence and the resulting avoidance of misconduct. -- from Publisher Description
