Hurricane Andrew, the public schools, and the rebuilding of community by Eugene F Provenzo( )
7 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 1,461 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book shows how schools help people to cope with disasters and rebuild their communities. Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida early on Monday morning, August 24, 1992. Widely described as the worst natural disaster in modern U.S. history, the storm left 38 people dead in South Florida, 80,000 homes destroyed, and damage estimates of at least billion. The area devastated by the hurricane was approximately three times the size of Manhattan. Almost 250,000 people were left homeless by Andrew--roughly the population of the entire city of Las Vegas, Nevada. Garbage generated by the storm in a single night was equal to the projected landfill for Dade County for the next thirty years. Hurricane Andrew, the Public Schools and the Rebuilding of Community addresses the experience of the Dade County Public Schools--its teachers and students, administrators and staff--during the first school year following the storm. In particular, it examines the role of the schools in helping people cope with a disaster of the magnitude of Hurricane Andrew, and more specifically, with their role in rebuilding community. ... W.E.B. Du Bois' exhibit of American Negroes : African Americans at the beginning of the twentieth century by Eugene F Provenzo( Book )
8 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 414 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line." This quote is among the most prophetic in American history. It was written by W. E. B. Du Bois for the Exhibition of American Negroes displayed at the 1900 Paris Exposition. They are words whose force echoed throughout the Twentieth Century. W.E.B. Du Bois put together a groundbreaking exhibit about African Americans for the 1900 World's Fair in Paris. For the first time, this book takes readers through the exhibit. With more than two hundred black-and-white images throughout, it explores the diverse lives of African Americans at the turn of the century, from challenges to accomplishments. Du Bois confronted stereotypes in many ways in the exhibit and he provided irrefutable evidence of how African Americans had been systematically discriminated against. Though it was only on display for a few brief months, the award-winning Exhibit of American Negroes represents the great lost archive of African American culture from the beginning of the twentieth century

The textbook as discourse sociocultural dimensions of American schoolbooks by Jr., Eugene F Provenzo( )
8 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 330 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The central assumption of The Textbook as Discourse is this: Interpreted in the flow of history, textbooks can provide important insights into the nature and meaning of a culture and the social and political discourses in which it is engaged. This book is about the social, political and cultural content of elementary and secondary textbooks in American education. It focuses on the nature of the discourses--the content and context--that represent what is included in textbooks. The term "discourse" provides the conceptual framework for the book, drawing on the work of the French social theorist Michel Foucault. The volume includes classic articles and book chapters as well as three original chapters written by the editors. To enhance its usefulness as a course text, each chapter includes an Overview, Key Concepts, and Questions for Reflection"--Provided by publisher
