This programme tells the story of Belgais, the home and arts center established by world-famous Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires. From all over the world, artists and students visit her special farm in rural Portugal to take master classes from Pires and other teachers. Her skepticism about the egocentric world of competitions and blind ambition led her to create an intimate and secluded space where she and the other instructors can live and work according to their own artistic principles. This programme is really a portrait of the artist herself allowing us to learn of her strong opinions on art and life and how these two elements are inextricably intertwined. This is a privileged glimpse at the consuming passion with which Maria João Pires teaches and creates
