The American research university from World War II to world wide web : governments, the private sector, and the emerging meta-university by Charles M Vest ( Book )
6 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 653 libraries worldwide
"Forty years after Clark Kerr coined the term multiversity, the American research university has continued to evolve into a complex force for social and economic good. This volume provides a unique opportunity to explore the current state of the research university system. Charles M. Vest, one of the leading advocates for autonomy for American higher education, offers a multifaceted view of the university at the beginning of a new century. With a complex mission and funding structure, the university finds its international openness challenged by new security concerns and its ability to contribute to worldwide opportunity through sharing and collaboration dramatically expanded by the Internet. In particular, Vest addresses the need to nurture broad access to our universities and stay true to the fundamental mission of creating opportunity."--Publisher's description.

Pursuing the endless frontier : essays on MIT and the role of research universities by Charles M Vest ( Book )
6 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 299 libraries worldwide
"In his fourteen years as president of MIT Charles Vest worked continuously to realize his vision of rebuilding America's trust in science and technology. In a time when the federal government dramatically reduced its funding of academic research programs and industry shifted its R&D resources into the short-term product-development process, Vest called for new partnerships with business and government. He called for universities to meet the intellectual challenges posed by the innovation-driven, globally connected needs of industry even as he reaffirmed basic academic values and the continuing need for longer-term scientific inquiry. In Pursuing the Endless Frontier, Vest addresses these and other issues in a series of essays written during his tenure as president of MIT. He discusses the research university's need to shift to a broader, more international outlook, the value of diversity in the academic community, the greater leadership role for faculty outside the classroom, and the boundless opportunity of new scientific and technological developments even when coupled with financial constraints."--BOOK JACKET.

Global technology changes and implications : summary of a forum ( Book )
1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 13 libraries worldwide
"In the first half of the forum, each panelist explored a specific dimension of the global spread of technology. The topics varied widely, from reducing poverty to the impact of young people on technology to the need for systems thinking in engineering. But all seven presenters foresaw a world in which engineering will be fundamentally different from what it has been. In the second half of the forum, the panelists discussed a variety of issues raised by moderator Charles Vest and by forum attendees"--Publisher's web site.

The report discusses holographic schemes for the detection of flaws in honeycomb panels and also describes the development of a method of reducing the sensitivity of holographic interferometry of transparent objects. An interferometric scheme for determining the surface roughness of flat objects is presented, and a planned application of the technique to curved objects is discussed. Recent advances in multiple-frequency holographic contouring are described, and a comparison of holographic and shadow-moire contouring schemes is presented. A computer simulation of acoustical holography and its use for reduction of aberration are also discussed. (Author).
