The American research university from World War II to world wide web : governments, the private sector, and the emerging meta-university by Charles M Vest( Book )

11 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 482 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Forty years after Clark Kerr coined the term multiversity, the American research university has continued to evolve into a complex force for social and economic good. This volume provides a unique opportunity to explore the current state of the research university system. Charles M. Vest, one of the leading advocates for autonomy for American higher education, offers a multifaceted view of the university at the beginning of a new century. With a complex mission and funding structure, the university finds its international openness challenged by new security concerns and its ability to contribute to worldwide opportunity through sharing and collaboration dramatically expanded by the Internet. In particular, Vest addresses the need to nurture broad access to our universities and stay true to the fundamental mission of creating opportunity."--Publisher's description
Pursuing the endless frontier : essays on MIT and the role of research universities by Charles M Vest( Book )

17 editions published between 2004 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 324 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In his fourteen years as president of MIT Charles Vest worked continuously to realize his vision of rebuilding America's trust in science and technology. In a time when the federal government dramatically reduced its funding of academic research programs and industry shifted its R & D resources into the short-term product-development process, Vest called for new partnerships with business and government. He called for universities to meet the intellectual challenges posed by the innovation-driven, globally connected needs of industry even as he reaffirmed basic academic values and the continuing need for longer-term scientific inquiry. In Pursuing the Endless Frontier, Vest addresses these and other issues in a series of essays written during his tenure as president of MIT. He discusses the research university's need to shift to a broader, more international outlook, the value of diversity in the academic community, the greater leadership role for faculty outside the classroom, and the boundless opportunity of new scientific and technological developments even when coupled with financial constraints."--Jacket

Perspectives on complex global challenges : education, energy, healthcare, security and resilience by M. Elisabeth Paté-Cornell( Book )

5 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 47 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Examines current and prospective challenges surrounding global challenges of education, energy, healthcare, security, and resilience This book discusses issues in large-scale systems in the United States and around the world. The authors examine the challenges of education, energy, healthcare, national security, and urban resilience. The book covers challenges in education including America's use of educational funds, standardized testing, and the use of classroom technology. On the topic of energy, this book examines debates on climate, the current and future developments of the nuclear power industry, the benefits and cost decline of natural gases, and the promise of renewable energy. The authors also discuss national security, focusing on the issues of nuclear weapons, terrorism and cyber security. Urban resilience is addressed in the context of natural threats such as hurricanes and floods. -Studies the usage of a globalized benchmark for both student and pedagogical performance -Covers topics such as surveillance, operational capabilities, movement of resources, and the pros and cons of globalization -Examines big data, evolving medical methodologies and effects on the medical educational curriculum, and the positive effects of electronic records in healthcare data Perspectives on Complex Global Challenges: Education, Energy Healthcare, Security, and Resilience serves as a reference for government officials, personnel in security, business executives and system engineers

Investigation of holographic testing techniques by Charles M Vest( Book )

5 editions published between 1970 and 1971 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report discusses holographic schemes for the detection of flaws in honeycomb panels and also describes the development of a method of reducing the sensitivity of holographic interferometry of transparent objects. An interferometric scheme for determining the surface roughness of flat objects is presented, and a planned application of the technique to curved objects is discussed. Recent advances in multiple-frequency holographic contouring are described, and a comparison of holographic and shadow-moire contouring schemes is presented. A computer simulation of acoustical holography and its use for reduction of aberration are also discussed. (Author)

Engineering systems : meeting human needs in a complex technological world by Olivier L De Weck( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Engineering, for much of the twentieth century, was mainly about artifacts and inventions. Now, it's increasingly about complex systems. As the airplane taxis to the gate, you access the Internet and check email with your PDA, linking the communication and transportation systems. At home, you recharge your plug-in hybrid vehicle, linking transportation to the electricity grid. Today's large-scale, highly complex sociotechnical systems converge, interact, and depend on each other in ways engineers of old could barely have imagined. As scale, scope, and complexity increase, engineers consider technical and social issues together in a highly integrated way as they design flexible, adaptable, robust systems that can be easily modified and reconfigured to satisfy changing requirements and new technological opportunities. Engineering Systems offers a comprehensive examination of such systems and the associated emerging field of study. Through scholarly discussion, concrete examples, and history, the authors consider the engineer's changing role, new ways to model and analyze these systems, the impacts on engineering education, and the future challenges of meeting human needs through the technologically enabled systems of today and tomorrow

Computer Tomography and Hybrid Optical/Digital Methods for Aerodynamic Measurements( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A hybrid optical/digital system has been developed to measure instantaneous, three-dimensional, density distributions in aerodynamic flows. The system uses a pulsed laser and discrete phase-step holographic interferometry, resulting in excellent phase resolution and a substantial level of automation of phase readout. The system uses reflection-, as well as transmission-, holography. Data are analyzed by computer tomography using a new algorithm (constrained iterative convolution) developed during this program. The entire system was used to study turbulent helium jets, disclosing their basic structures. Research also was conducted to develop methods for computer tomographic analysis when the optical probing rays are bent due to strong refraction, e.g., around shocks. Two iterative methods and a perturbation approach is recommended
Global technology : changes and implications : summary of a forum by Steven Olsen( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the first half of the forum, each panelist explored a specific dimension of the global spread of technology. The topics varied widely, from reducing poverty to the impact of young people on technology to the need for systems thinking in engineering. But all seven presenters foresaw a world in which engineering will be fundamentally different from what it has been. In the second half of the forum, the panelists discussed a variety of issues raised by moderator Charles Vest and by forum attendees"--Publisher's web site
