The culture of violence by Marcial Rubio Correa( )

9 editions published in 1994 in English and German and held by 2,057 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume examines the relationship between culture and violence, an aspect of the phenomenon heretofore neglected but of growing interest and importance. Taking as their point of departure violence between groups within a state, or between the state and groups residing within it, the contributions seek to identify and analyse the possible links between culture and violence. Theoretical arguments are balanced with specific case-studies - Sri Lanka, Colombia, Bolivia, Uganda, Venezuela, the US, Brazil, and Chile. The discussions range from considerations of forms of violence, the root factors of violence, the use of ethnic myth in power and violence, and state terrorism, to gender and class factors, violence against children, drug-related violence, and human rights." "These essays will provide new insights and focus for understanding internal violence and its cultural connections to a broad audience of scholars, policy makers, and students of international politics and culture."--Jacket

Regional mechanisms and international security in Latin America by Olga Pellicer de Brody( )

3 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,925 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A great diversity of points of view on international security, one of the most current subjects in the area of international relations, coexist in Latin America and the Caribbean. This region is immersed in an interesting debate in which reticence and enthusiasm coexist and confront themselves in order to enlarge the functions of regional mechanisms of security, or to evaluate experiences acquired either through UN action or recent tendencies of the Security Council. The center of debate is also found in the impossible to ignore role of the United States. Does the end of the Cold War modify the U.S. interests in Latin America in the field of security? Should existing mechanisms of collective security in the region be strengthened? Or should new alternatives be found? How far is a shared agenda for security, not only with the United States but also between the countries in Latin America itself, and among them and the Caribbean, possible or desirable? How acceptable are the new tendencies of the multilateral organizations in the field of security of the countries in the region? These are some of the questions that this book deals with from different points of view. It presents a new perspective on the contemporary debate over international security in Latin America and the Caribbean. -- Provided by publisher
The mega-city in Latin America( )

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 1,833 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"By the Year 2000, Latin America will contain five metropolitan areas with more than 8 million people. Their combined population will be over 70 million, and approximately one Latin America in seven will live in those five cities. Two of them, Mexico City and Sao Paulo, will arguably be the world's two largest cities." "The sheer number of people living in Latin America's mega-cities is not the only reason for looking at them carefully. Unfortunately, they also demonstrate many of the worst symptoms of the region's underdevelopment: vast areas of shanty towns, huge numbers of poor people, high concentrations of air and water pollution, and serious levels of traffic congestion. This book is about the prospects for their future." "Several clear conclusions emerge from the book. First, the largest cities of Latin America differ greatly in terms of their future prospects. It is far easier to be optimistic in Buenos Aires than in Lima. Second, whether urban problems improve or deteriorate has rather little to do with size of city an a great deal to do with trends in the wider economy and society. Increasingly, those trends are determined not just by local decisions but by decisions made outside the region. Third, Latin America's mega-cities are not going to grow to unmanageable proportions because their growth rates have generally slowed. Fourth, management is a critical issue for the future but it is difficult to know whether the quality of management will improve or deteriorate through time."--Jacket

4 editions published in 1994 in English and German and held by 1,763 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines a range of issues related to the mega-city phenomenon. Part one deals with the growth of mega-cities and explores demographic issues, labour force change in the big cities of Asia, the effect of macroeconomic forces on the world city system, and the relations between technology and the city. In part two, the discussion focuses on the economic and social consequences of mega-city growth. Part three looks at the crucial issue of the management of mega-cities, taking up such issues as infrastructure financing, land and shelter needs, transportation, and environmental management. The final chapter examines priority urban management issues in developing countries and derives a research agenda for the 1990s. (Adapté du résumé de l'éditeur)

Making states work : state failure and the crisis of governance( )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,596 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the wealth of literature on state failure, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the question of what constitutes state success and what enables a state to succeed. This book is a joint project of the International Peace Academy and the United Nations University and examines the strategies and tactics of international actors, local political elites, and civil society groups to build or rebuild public institutions before they reach the point of failure: to make the state work. It is frequently assumed that the collapse of state structures, whether through defeat by an exter-nal power

Fault lines of international legitimacy by Hilary Charlesworth( )

6 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 856 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fault Lines of International Legitimacy addresses the following questions: What are the features and functions of legitimacy in the international realm? How does international legitimacy - as exemplified in particular by multilateral norms, organizations, and policies - change over time? What role does the international distribution of power and its evolution have in the establishment and transformation of legitimacy paradigms? To what extent do democratic values account for the growing importance of legitimacy and the increasing difficulty of achieving it at the international and national levels?" "One of the central messages of the book is that although the search for international legitimacy is an elusive endeavor, there is no alternative to it if we want to respond to the intertwined demands of justice and security and make them an integral and strategic part of international relations."--Jacket
The African food system and its interaction with human health and nutrition by Per Pinstrup-Andersen( )

9 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 854 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hunger, malnutrition, poor health, and deficient food systems are widespread in Sub-Saharan Africa. While much is known about African food systems and about African health and nutrition, our understanding of the interaction between food systems and health and nutrition is deficient. Moreover, the potential health gains from changes in the food system are frequently overlooked in policy design and implementation. The authors of The African Food System and its Interactions with Human Health and Nutrition examine how public policy and research aimed at the food system and its interaction with human health and nutrition can improve the well-being of Africans and help achieve the United. Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Several of the MDGs focus on health-related challenges: hunger alleviation; maternal, infant, and child mortality; the control of H IV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria; and the provision of safe water and improved sanitation. These challenges are intensified by problems of low agricultural and food system productivity, gender inequity, lack of basic infrastructure, and environmental degradation, all of which have direct and indirect detrimental effects on health, nutrition, and the food system. Reflecting the complexity and multidisciplinary nature of these problems and their solutions, this book features contributions by world-renowned experts in economics, agriculture, health, nutrition, food science, and demography. Per Pinstrup-Andersen is the H.E. Babcock Professor of Food, Nutrition, and Public Policy, the J. Thomas Clark Professor of Entrepreneurship, and Professor of Applied Economics at Cornell University and Professor of Agricultural Economics at Copenhagen University. He is the 2001 World Food Prize Laureate. --Book Jacket
