William Shakespeare, Antony and Cleopatra by
Kenneth Parker(
Book
)
15 editions published between 1998 and 2005 in English and held by 281 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Offered here is an historical and critical exposition of commentaries of the play. These are traced back to firmly held assumptions, about theories of literary production and consumption as well as political relations, not yet wholly shed in the present. Dominant traditions (of Cleopatra as 'whore' and 'gypsy'; of Antony as 'deserter'; of 'Rome' as the measure by which it, as well as 'Egypt' should be read) are not simply questioned, but, instead, close reading of the text of the play provides a comprehensive set of alternative readings based upon mostly post-colonial and feminist theories. From this there emerges the concluding argument that, of all Shakespeare's plays, Antony and Cleopatra is the text for our times; one that is 'past the size of dreaming'."--Jacket

Dorothy Osborne : letters to Sir William Temple, 1652-54 : observations on love, literature, politics, and religion by
Dorothy Osborne(
Book
)
13 editions published between 2002 and 2017 in English and held by 148 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This title was first published in 2002: As attested to by scholars from Macaulay via Virginia Woolf to more recent critics, the letters of Dorothy Osborne (b. 1627) are not only the most elegant, but are also the most consistently readable in the language. In this revised and updated edition of her letters to the man whom she would propose and later marry, Kenneth Parker presents, along with transcriptions of the letters themselves, their publication history, and an in-depth exploration of the political, social, literary and critical contexts surrounding them. Osborne's letters offer astonishingly sharp-sighted comments on political and cultural events of her time. As told by Parker, the story of their creation, transmission and preservation offers a fascinating insight into the mind of a remarkable woman whose actions provide revealing insights into, and materials for, the study of the politics of culture in one of the key moments of transformation in England."--Provided by publisher
