Why preserve natural variety? by Bryan G Norton( )

19 editions published between 1987 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Norton provides a critical overview of the range of thought on the preservation of species issue. He presents a new and comprehensive rationale for preservation of both species and ecosystems, and addresses policy issues. Part A of the book discusses views according to which natural species and ecosystems are valued primarily for human use or enjoyment. Norton shows the many difficulties of quantifying species in terms of "human demand values." Part B examines views which give intrinsic value to species. Norton's own comprehensive rationale, presented in Part C, argues for preserving biological diversity. He appeals to the power of human contacts with wild species to transform and uplift the human species. ISBN 0-691-07762-2: $30.00
Sustainability : a philosophy of adaptive ecosystem management by Bryan G Norton( )

18 editions published between 2005 and 2010 in English and held by 2,092 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"While many disciplines contribute to environmental conservation, there is little successful integration of science and social values. Arguing that the central problem in conservation is a lack of effective communication, Bryan Norton shows in Sustainability how current linguistic resources discourage any shared, multidisciplinary public deliberation over environmental goals and policy. In response, Norton develops a new, interdisciplinary approach to defining sustainability, using philosophical and linguistic analyses to create a nonideological vocabulary that can accommodate scientific and evaluative environmental discourse." "Emphasizing cooperation and adaptation through social learning, Norton provides a practical framework that encourages an experimental approach to language clarification and problem formulation, as well as an interdisciplinary approach to creating solutions. By moving beyond the scientific arena to acknowledge the importance of public discourse, Sustainability offers an entirely novel approach to environmentalism."--Jacket

Ethics on the ark : zoos, animal welfare, and wildlife conservation by Bryan G Norton( Book )

15 editions published between 1995 and 2012 in English and held by 854 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ethics on the Ark presents a passionate, multivocal discussion - among zoo professionals, activists, conservation biologists, and philosophers - about the future of zoos and aquariums, the treatment of animals in captivity, and the question of whether the individual, the species, or the ecosystem is the most important focus in conservation efforts. Contributors represent all sides of the issues. Some advocate proposals to increase zoos' work in captive breeding programs. Others call for zoos to turn away from exotic, charismatic species and focus instead on community education programs aimed at protecting local fauna and habitats. Still others contend that zoos ought to be abolished." "Moving from the fundamental to the practical, from biodiversity to population regulation, from animal research to captive breeding, Ethics on the Ark represents an important gathering of the many fervent and contentious viewpoints shaping the wildlife conservation debate."--Jacket
Ecosystem health : new goals for environmental management by Robert Costanza( Book )

13 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 696 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As environmental regulatory and management agencies (most notably the Environmental Protection Agency) move toward a broad set of management goals to protect ecosystem health, developing an adequate definition for "ecosystem health" has become increasingly important. This work is a multidisciplinary collection of perspectives on the concept of health as it relates to ecosystems. The contributors - leading ecologists, philosophers, and economists - analyze the normative, conceptual, and biological issues surrounding the idea of ecosystem health. They examine both theoretical and practical aspects of the issues, and look at philosophical and ethical underpinnings as well as implications for public policy and ecosystems management. Ecosystem Health is a groundbreaking attempt to formulate an understanding of the quality and health of natural environments so that regulatory mandates can be brought in line with legislative goals. Ultimately, it seeks a new ethic of sustainability that will serve to protect the vital processes of nature

Sustainable values, sustainable change : a guide to environmental decision making by Bryan G Norton( Book )

6 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the most trafficked terms in contemporary life, sustainability has risen to prominence as a buzzword before the many parties laying claim to it have even agreed how to define it. But the term's political currency demands that we develop an understanding of this elusive concept. Norton here offers an action-oriented, pragmatic response to the disconnect between public and academic discourse around sustainability, revealing that the path to sustainability cannot be guided by fixed, utopian objectives projected into the future. Sustainability will instead be achieved through experimentation, incremental learning, and adaptive management. Looking across scales to today's global problems, Norton urges us to learn to think like a planet"--Page four of cover
