This book provides classroom teachers with a variety of discipline models, techniques, methods, and constructs designed to enable them to move beyond a singular approach in handling classroom behavior problems. The book first discusses the Teacher Behavior Continuum (tbc) which shows the teacher the context of his or her own general behavior with disruptive children, and then uses the tbc as a construct for viewing three major schools of psychological thought on managing students (the Non-Interventionists, the Interventionists, and the Interactionalists). The most popular authors of each major school are discussed and their specific model strategies are explained. Subsequently, the stages of a child's social development is explained in terms of assessment criteria used to determine appropriate strategies for individual children, and a school process of "staffing" is suggested to demonstrate how a school team might "mainstream" difficult students. Finally, the strengths and limitations of each model are pointed out, and suggestions for educational change are outlined. An inventory designed to help teachers assess their own beliefs on classroom discipline is included in Appendix a, and three case-studies describing how teachers of different beliefs made beginning choices and developed their own eclectic pathway of dealing with misbehaving students are presented in Appendix B. a brief discussion of moral reasoning from 7 years to adulthood is included in Appendix C. This textbook, intended for graduate students in introductory educational supervision courses, draws on the research on effective schools, teacher and adult development, and supervisory practice, as well as on direct practical experience, to provide information that supervisors can use to help their schools be more successful. The term "supervision" is defined as "the school function that improves instruction through direct assistance to teachers, curriculum development, inservice training, group development, and action research." The material presented is intended to spur thought and provide supervisors with information about ideas and practices that can be selected and modified for use in accordance with local school situations. The book is divided into six parts that are further subdivided into 19 chapters. The first part is an introduction to the concept of supervision and to the organization of the book; part 2 is devoted to essential knowledge needed for supervision; part 3 deals with interpersonal skills; part 4 explains the technical skills supervisors need; and part 5 discusses the application of the knowledge and skills described to the tasks of supervision. The sixth and final part suggests ways of applying knowledge, skills, and tasks to integrate individual needs with organizational goals to achieve instructional success. Each chapter is followed by recommended academic, field, and developmental exercises and by a list of references. Seven appendixes address personal educational philosophy; skill practice in nondirective, collaborative, and directive behaviors; the initiation of peer supervision; behavioral-objective curriculum; and webbing curriculum. Instructional supervision is intertwined with the debate on how humans learn and on what knowledge is of greatest import. Those who believe that knowledge is acquired as an individual chooses to follow his or her own inclinations tend to favor nondirective supervision. Those who believe that learning is the result of reciprocity and experimentation advocate collaborative supervision. Those who believe that learning is acquired through compliance with a set of standards advocate directive supervision. Because all methods can be successful when applied in the proper circumstances, it is important for a supervisor to be aware of his or her own beliefs on supervision. To help create such an awareness, the author includes a self-assessment questionnaire for supervisors to use in determining their beliefs. The questionnaire is followed by a discussion on which of ten behaviors on the supervisory behavior continuum (listening, clarifying, encouraging, presenting, problem-solving, negotiating, demonstrating, directing, standardizing, and reinforcing) are associated with the orientation.
