Some of the world's largest and most spectacular birds are to be found among this group of wading birds. Tragically, they also include many of the world's most endangered species, as changes in land use erode their wetland habitats. Some, like the White stork, have lived alongside humans for hundreds of years and are well known from numerous scientific studies. Others, like the Storm's Stork and the Ibises of West Africa, South-East Asia and South America live so secluded a life in the remote corners of the globe that they will probably be extinct before even the most basic details of their bi

A Report on NATO field trials on sampling and identification of chemical agents : a description of Canadian preparation, participation and recommendations by Defence Research Establishment Suffield( Book )

4 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In September 1997, NATO conducted two field trials on the sampling and identification of chemical warfare agents. The main objective of the trials was to assess the validity of the procedures and guidance provided in NATO Allied Engineering Publication 10 in light of the practical experience gained in those trials. The performance of each of the ten participating teams was assessed by umpires using criteria developed from relevant NATO standardization agreements. This report describes Canada's preparation for, participation in, and recommendations from the NATO field trials. Scope of the trials included deployment of sampling teams to a chemically contaminated site, conducting a site survey, collecting relevant samples, undertaking decontamination, and packaging samples for transport. Results of debriefing after each trial are presented. The report concludes with recommendations regarding the mandate of the NATO Sampling & Identification of Biological/Chemical Agents subgroup and the use of Publication 10 as an operational document

Organic phase entrapment of glucose oxidase in polymeric nanoparticles by James Hancock( )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Immobilizing enzymes using polymeric particles is an excellent means to increase the reusability of a biocatalyst. Recovering active enzyme free in solution is difficult. However, the immobilized enzyme-particle system can be easily removed using methods such as filtration or centrifugation. One interesting immobilization technique is to entrap enzymes within the polymer matrix. To achieve this, polystyrene particles of varied size (100 to 750 nm) and degree of cross-linking (monomer: cross-linker molar ratios ranging from 1:1 to systems with no cross-linker) were treated with glucose oxidase in toluene solution. In toluene, the polymer expands, allowing enzyme to diffuse into the matrix. Then, the particles are treated with hexane, a worse solvent, which forces the polymer to shrink, entrapping the enzyme. The enzyme-polymer particle complexes were tested using a standard enzyme activity assay to quantify the various systems of varied size and cross-linking. The effect of cross-linking appears to be that there is a minimum level at about 0.1 moles/mole required to support reaction, which had an observed reaction rate of about 65 [micro moles] min⁻¹ mg solid⁻¹. Kinetic studies at varied polymer particle size indicate that smaller particles result in higher reaction rates. Kinetic studies at varied polymer particle size indicate that smaller particles result in higher reaction rates; for the case of 250 nm particles, the observed rate was close to 30 [micro moles] min⁻¹ mg solid⁻¹
