English poetry of the Romantic period, 1789-1830 by J. R Watson( Book )

54 editions published between 1985 and 2016 in English and held by 1,310 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On its first appearance English Poetry of the Romantic Period was widely praised as on of the best introductions to the subject. This edition includes updated material in the light of recent work in Romanticism and Romantic poetry. The book discusses the concerns that linked the Romantic poets, from their responses to the political and social upheavals around them to their interest in the poet's visionary and prophetic role. It includes helpful and authoritative discussions of figures such as Blake, Clare, Coleridge, Crabbe, Keats, Scott, Shelley and Wordsworth
An annotated anthology of hymns by J. R Watson( Book )

21 editions published between 2002 and 2007 in English and held by 742 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is not a book for worship: the hymns are printed in a chronological sequence and not by Christian season or subject, as they would be in a church hymn book. It is an anthology for those who would like to understand more about hymns: each one is given a commentary which sets it in context, identifies significant sources, and provides explanatory and critical material. An introductory essay discusses the hymn as a historical and literary form, and the way in which it appeals to so many people."

Romanticism and war : a study of British Romantic Period writers and the Napoleonic Wars by J. R Watson( Book )

11 editions published between 2003 and 2014 in English and held by 319 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Much attention has been paid to the ways in which British Romantic-period writers responded to the French Revolution. Less attention has been paid to the long wars which followed, from 1792 to 1815. This book discusses the ways in which those wars were preceived by those who lived through them and wrote about them: writers such as Scott, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and others. It is also concerned with the way in which war has been more generally perceived, by writers, moralists and soldiers. Among the writers discussed are William Napier and Carl von Clausewitz, both of whom fought in the Napoleonic wars, and whose writings stand beside those of the poets and novelists, helping to condition ways of thinking about war in general. The perceptions of the Romantic period can be seen to have dominated the thinking about war until the First World War
