New worlds in the cosmos : the discovery of exoplanets by M Mayor( Book )

11 editions published between 2003 and 2006 in English and held by 617 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the discovery in 1995 of the first planet orbiting another ordinary star, we know that planets are not unique to our own Solar System. For centuries, humanity has wondered whether we are alone in the Universe. We are now finally one step closer to knowing the answer. The quest for exoplanets is an exciting one, because it holds the possibility that one day we might find life elsewhere in the Universe, born in the light of another sun. Written from the perspective of a key player in the scientific adventure, this account describes the development of the modern observing technique that has enabled astronomers to find so many planets orbiting around other stars. It reveals the wealth of new planets that have now been discovered outside our Solar System, and what this means in terms of finding other life in the Universe."--Jacket

Starting with this volume, the Lecture Notes of the renowned Advanced Courses of the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy will be published annually. In each course, three extensive lectures given by leading experts in their respective fields cover different and essential aspects of the subject. The 20th course, held at Les Diablerets in April 1990, dealt with current research on active galactic nuclei; it represents the most up-to-date views on the subject, presented with particular regard for clarity. The previous courses considered a wide variety of subjects, beginning with "Theory of Stellar Athmospheres" in 1971 and ending with "The Milky Way as a Galaxy" in 1989. The Lecture Notes of these Saas-Fee Courses appeared as publications of the Geneva Observatory, from which they can still be ordered (chemin des Maillettes 51, CH-1290 Sauverny, Switzerland)

In the frame of the search for extrasolar planets, this thesis innovates and focuses on the search for extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around A and F dwarf stars, hotter than these stars. I developped a new method for radial velocity measurements, that I tested and applied in the frame of a survey with the spectrographs ELODIE and HARPS, which lead at the moment to the detection of two planets and one brown dwarf, and to numerous candidates. I also developped diagnostics of the presence of pulsations and activity modifiyng the stellar surface and the radial velocities measured. Besides, I also performed this search with another method, the direct imaging at high angular resolution, complementary to the radial velocity method, using the instruments PUEO and NACO. The candidate companions detected have to be confirmed. This search will allow to characterize planets and brown dwarfs around A and F-type stars, and the impact of the stellar mass ont the formation processes
