The great American educator Noah Webster first published A Grammatical Institute of the English Language, otherwise known as the Blue Back Speller, in 1783. His goal was to provide a uniquely American, Christ-centered approach to training children. Little did he know that this remarkable gem would become the staple for parents and educators for more than a century and would help to build the most literate nation in the history of the West. Many of the Founding Fathers used this book to home school their children, including Benjamin Franklin who taught his granddaughter to read, spell, and pronounce words using "Old Blue Back."

Essays on education in the early Republic by Frederick Rudolph( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 952 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Because they recognized themselves as being engaged in the making of a nation, the essayists thought readily about education as a national problem and as a national opportunity. These essaysist revealed a bias toward "the good of society" rather than "the good of the individual." Society essentially could not afford to leave the question of education up to parents. These essays are in one sense a commentary on the structure and pattern, or lack thereof, of organized education inherited from the colonial period. As the United States increasingly moves toward some sense of maturity and of the responsibility that goes with it, the visions and the expectations of these eighteenth-century republicans can be instructive. If, as sometimes now seems possible, we are beginning to think and act nationally in matters of education, these writers deserve our attention as the first Americans in any systematic way to turn their talents toward defining the American dream in education. - Introduction

Scripture references have been standardized in modern format, and many abbreviations have been spelled out for greater understanding. The text has been newly typeset with Charter typeface, making the text highly readable in spite of its small size. --from publisher's preface
