First published in English in 1953, this important book from eminent philosopher Karl Jaspers deals with the philosophy of the history of mankind. More specifically, its avowed aim is to assist in heightening our awareness of the present by placing it within the framework of the long obscurity of prehistory and the boundless realm of possibilities which lie within the undecided future. This analysis is split into three parts: World history; the present and the future; and the meaning of history

Reason and Existenz; five lectures by Karl Jaspers( Book )

114 editions published between 1935 and 1997 in 5 languages and held by 1,903 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The intent of Jaspers' philosophizing then is simply to recall us to our authentic situation. This recall is not itself a doctrine; it is only the stimulus to an inward action each must perform for himself in communication with others. Jaspers' Existenz-philosophy is thus an attempt to consider and enact human honesty; it is philosophy, not as wisdom, but as the love of wisdom

The question of German guilt by Karl Jaspers( Book )

42 editions published between 1947 and 2001 in English and German and held by 1,121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Shortly after the Nazi government fell, a philosophy professor at Heidelberg University lectured on a subject that burned the consciousness and conscience of thinking Germans. 'Are the German people guilty?' These lectures by Karl Jaspers, an outstanding European philosopher, attracted wide attention among German intellectuals and students; they seemed to offer a path to sanity and morality in a disordered world. Jaspers, a life-long liberal, attempted in this book to discuss rationally a problem that had thus far evoked only heat and fury. Neither an evasive apology nor a thorough condemnation, his book distinguished between types of guilt and degrees of responsibility. He listed four categories of guilt: criminal guilt (the commitment of overt acts), political guilt (the degree of political acquiescence in the Nazi regime), moral guilt (a matter of private judgment among one's friends), and metaphysical guilt (a universally shared responsibility of those who chose to remain alive rather than die in protest against Nazi atrocities)."

Myth and Christianity; an inquiry into the possibility of religion without myth by Karl Jaspers( Book )

15 editions published between 1958 and 2005 in English and German and held by 984 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the world's greatest living philosophers debates with one of the world's foremost theologians an issue of the utmost importance to this generation: Can Christianity survive as a vital force in the modern world? According to Bultmann, leading Protestant existentialist and a practising minister, the traditional religion of the West can best be rescued from skepticism if its "mythological" elements are dropped and only their meanings retained. Jaspers, a found of "Existenz" philosophy, opposes this view and contends that religion without mythology is impossible. In the course of this discussion, a number of basic philosophical, religious and social questions are re-examined, with results that have already had a crucial effect on modern thought
Hannah Arendt/Karl Jaspers correspondence, 1926-1969 by Hannah Arendt( Book )

42 editions published between 1985 and 2006 in 5 languages and held by 936 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The correspondence between Hannah Arendt and Karl Jaspers begins in 1926, when the twenty-year-old Arendt studied philosophy with Jaspers in Heidelberg. It is interrupted by Arendt's emigration and Jasper's 'inner emigration' and resumes in the fall of 1945. From then until Jaspers's death in 1969, the initial teacher-student relationship develops into a close friendship. Three countries figure prominently in the correspondence: Germany, Israel, and the United States. Among the topics are Fascism, the atom bomb and the threat of global destruction, German guilt for the Holocaust, Jewishness, the State of Israel, American politics and American universities, the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. Arendt and Jaspers discuss people both famous and obscure. They gossip, joke complain, and argue. They commiserate with each other over the illnesses and infirmities of old age. And they converse about the world's great philosophers: Spinoza, Kant, Marx, Max Weber, Heidegger. Here is a fascinating dialogue between a woman and a man, a Jew and a German, a questioner and a visionary, both uncompromising in their examination of our troubled century."
