"In The Cultural Achievement, Mr. Rowse chronicles the astonishingly rich cultural flowering that marked the reign of Elizabeth I. He brings vividly to life the age's poetry, painting, sculpture, minor arts, and, above all, the tightly knit world of the theatre, in which a community of playwrights and actors worked with and sometimes against each other. He devotes individual chapters to the masters of Elizabethan music: Byrd, Dowland, Weelkes, Gibbons, and their followers, and to the science of the English Renaissance, with discussions of Gilbert's great work on magnetism and Harvey's discovery of the circulation of the blood."--Jacket
The expansion of Elizabethan England by A. L Rowse( Book )

Elizabethan society is arguably the most successful in English history. The adventurers and merchants (as well as the poets and playwrights) of that age are legendary. The subject of this classic study by A. L. Rowse is that society's 'expansion'. Elizabethan society expanded both physically (first into Cornwall, then Ireland, then across the oceans to first contact with Russia, the Canadian North and then the opening up of trade with India and the Far East) and in terms of ideas and influences on international affairs. Rowse argues that in the Elizabethan age we see the beginning of England's huge impact upon the world

The book begins with a portrait of my native Cornish village, as it remained virtually unchanged from Victorian days, with its old customs, characters, and stories, up to the war of 1914-1918. For this part I have relied upon a note-book which I kept while my father was alive, in which I jotted down stories and memories of his that take us back to the village as it was in the 1860s. While for the later chapters I had my own schoolboy diaries, which I kept during my last years at school, to go upon and keep me straight. With these aids I hope that the book may reveal something of the inner process of a working-class child's education, and may have some value for the discussions as to the future shaping of our educational system. - Preface
