The origin of species by
Charles Darwin(
Book
)
322 editions published between 1859 and 2019 in 4 languages and held by 6,534 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the Origin of Species (1859) Darwin challenged many of the most deeply held beliefs of the Western world. Arguing for a material, not divine, origin of species, he showed that new species are achieved by 'natural selection'. Development, diversification, decay, extinction and absence of plan are all inherent to his theories. Darwin read prodigiously across many fields; he reflected on his experiences as a traveller, he experimented. His profoundly influential concept of 'natural selection' condenses materials from past and present, from the Galapagos Islands to rural Staffordshire, from English back gardens to colonial encounters. The Origin communicates the enthusiasm of original thinking in an open, descriptive style, and Darwin's emphasis on the value of diversity speaks more strongly now than ever

The expression of the emotions in man and animals by
Charles Darwin(
Book
)
360 editions published between 1872 and 2020 in 4 languages and held by 5,869 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Why do we bite people we feel affection towards? Why do dogs wag their tails? Or cats purr? Why do we get embarrassed, and why does embarrassment make us blush?" "These, and many other questions about the emotional life of man and animals are answered in this remarkable book. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals was an immediate best-seller when it was first published in 1872 and still provides the point of departure for research into emotion and facial expression. In his study of infants and children (including a delightfully objective study of his own baby's smiles and pouts), of the insane, of painting and sculpture, of cats and dogs and monkeys, and of the ways that people in different cultures express their feelings, Darwin's insights have not been improved upon by modern science." "This definitive edition contains a substantial new Introduction and Afterword by Paul Ekman. Ekman also provides commentaries that use the latest scientific knowledge to elaborate, support and occasionally challenge Darwin's insights."--Jacket

"In this book, David Korten makes a compelling and well-documented case that capitalism's claims to being the engine of wealth creation, the champion of democracy, and the embodiment of the market economy are unfounded. Among Korten's conclusions: Capitalism is a pathology that afflicts democracies and market economies in the absence of vigilant public oversight. The consolidation of economic power under a handful of global mega-corporations is a victory for central planning - not the market economy. The alternative to the new global capitalism is a planetary system of democratically governed market economies that honor basic market principles of the sort actually advocated by Adam Smith."--BOOK JACKET

The variation of animals and plants under domestication by
Charles Darwin(
Book
)
325 editions published between 1773 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 4,113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Charles Darwin (1809 1882) first published this work in 1868 in two volumes. The book began as an expansion of the first two chapters of On the Origin of Species: 'Variation under Domestication' and 'Variation under Nature', and it developed into one of his largest works; Darwin referred to it as his 'big book'. Volume 1 deals with the variations introduced into species as a result of domestication, through changes in climate, diet, breeding and an absence of predators. He began with an examination of dogs and cats, comparing them with their wild counterparts, and moved on to investigate horses and asses; pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats; domestic rabbits; domestic pigeons; fowl; and finally cultivated plants. The work is a masterpiece of nineteenth-century scientific investigation; it is a key text in the development of Darwin's own thought and of the wider discipline of evolutionary biology."

The origin of species by means of natural selection : or, The preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life by
Charles Darwin(
Book
)
428 editions published between 1859 and 2011 in English and French and held by 3,749 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species in 1859 marked a dramatic turning point in scientific thought. The volume had taken Darwin more than twenty years to publish, in part because he envisioned the storm of controversy it was certain to unleash. Indeed, selling out its first edition on its first day, The Origin of Species revolutionized science, philosophy, and theology. Darwin's reasoned, documented arguments carefully advance his theory of natural selection and assertion that species were not created all at once by a divine hand but started with a few simple forms that mutated and adapted over time. Whether commenting on his own ill health, discussing his experiments to test instinct in bees, or relating a conversation about a South American burrowing rodent, Darwin's monumental achievement is surprisingly personal and delightfully readable. Its ideas remain extremely profound even today, making it the most influential book in the natural sciences ever written -- a work not just important to its time, but to the history of humankind

The different forms of flowers on plants of the same species by
Charles Darwin(

The subject of the present volume, namely the differently formed flowers normally produced by certain kinds of plants, either on the same stock or on distinct stocks, ought to have been treated by a professed botanist, to which distinction I can lay no claim. As far as the sexual relations of flowers are concerned, Linnaeus long ago divided them into hermaphrodite, monoecious, dioecious, and polygamous species. This fundamental distinction, with the aid of several subdivisions in each of the four classes, will serve my purpose; but the classification is artificial, and the groups often pass into one another. The movements and habits of climbing plants by
Charles Darwin(

172 editions published between 1865 and 2018 in 3 languages and held by 2,469 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This Essay first appeared in the ninth volume of the 'Journal of the Linnean Society, ' published in 1865. It is here reproduced in a corrected and, I hope, clearer form, with some additional facts. The illustrations were drawn by my son, George Darwin. Fritz Muller, after the publication of my paper, sent to the Linnean Society (Journal, vol. ix., p. 344) some interesting observations on the climbing plants of South Brazil, to which I shall frequently refer. Recently two important memoirs, chiefly on the difference in growth between the upper and lower sides of tendrils, and on the mechanism of the movements of twining-plants, by Dr. Hugo de Vries, have appeared in the 'Arbeiten des Botanischen Instituts in Wurzburg, ' Heft. iii., 1873. These memoirs ought to be carefully studied by every one interested in the subject, as I can here give only references to the more important points. This excellent observer, as well as Professor Sachs, {1} attributes all the movements of tendrils to rapid growth along one side; but, from reasons assigned towards the close of my fourth chapter, I cannot persuade myself that this holds good with respect to those due to a touch This Essay first appeared in the ninth volume of the 'Journal of the Linnean Society, ' published in 1865.

The origin of species by means of natural selection ; The descent of man and selection in relation to sex by
Charles Darwin(
Book
)
35 editions published between 1952 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,054 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Darwin's theory of natural selection issued a profound challenge to orthodox thought and belief: no being or species has been specifically created; all are locked into a pitiless struggle for existence, with extinction looming for those not fitted for the task. Yet The Origin of Species (1859) is also a humane and inspirational vision of ecological interrelatedness, revealing the complex mutual interdependencies between animal and plant life, climate and physical environment, and - by implication - within the human world. Written for the general reader, in a style which combines the rigour of science with the subtlety of literature, The Origin of Species remains one of the founding documents of the modern age

This account of his grandfather Erasmus Darwin is the last of Charles Darwin's books to be published in full."--Jacket
