Jesus : an experiment in Christology by Edward Schillebeeckx( Book )

102 editions published between 1974 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 2,076 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The existence of the historical Jesus cannot be doubted. But who was Jesus of Nazareth? And who is he for us today? In this controversial work Schillebeeckx offers his ''experiment'': an informative and sustained hermeneutical reflection on the story of Jesus. It became a bestseller, and would become the first volume of Schillebeeckx'' trilogy on Jesus Christ. He presents a Christology ''from below'', rooted in the synoptic gospels, but especially in Mark and in the Q tradition. At the same time he is clearly interested in portraying ''the historical Jesus'' as both Proclaimer and Proclaimed
Christ : the experience of Jesus as Lord by Edward Schillebeeckx( Book )

34 editions published between 1977 and 1993 in English and held by 1,282 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this sequel to "Jesus: an experiment in Christology", the focus shifts from the historical person of Jesus of Nazareth to the experience of Christ in the Church. As a result of their experience, New Testament Christians, in a variety of ways, found grace, or salvation from God, in Jesus. Our task must be to understand as deeply as possible the nature of the experience of these Christians in order to see how it is found -- and acted upon -- in our very different modern world
Christ, the sacrament of the encounter with God by Edward Schillebeeckx( Book )

94 editions published between 1959 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 1,155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The account of the sacrament offered here is very far from those narrowly conceived treatises, whether technical or popular, where the sacraments are treated of in isolation from the rest of Christian and human experience, either as matter for specialists or as the object of a purely liturgical enthusiasm. Once the Christian religion is seen as an encounter of God and man in Christ the 'primordial sacrament', the sacraments themselves can be seen as inseparable from a whole, economy of revelation in word and reality ... In fact, what is offered here is not simply an account of the sacrament but of the Christian religion ... and through it of non-Christian religion and life."
Interim report on the books Jesus & Christ by Edward Schillebeeckx( Book )

40 editions published between 1978 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 1,030 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As a result of the publication of Jesus. An Experiment in Christology (volume 6) and Christ. The Christian Experience in the Modern World (volume 7), Schillebeeckx was accused of denying the divinity of Jesus and the resurrection as objective reality. In this ''interim report'' he responds to these criticisms. Schillebeeckx argues that the interpretation of his publications depends to a large extent on what the reader takes as a starting point. This book, therefore, is about presuppositions and methods of interpretation. Schillebeeckx begins by looking once again at the nature of revelation

Church : the human story of God by Edward Schillebeeckx( Book )

54 editions published between 1989 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 823 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book was originally planned as the ''ecclesiological'' third part of Schillebeeckx Jesus trilogy. It indeed concludes his thinking about the relevance of the living Jesus through history, but with a different approach than originally intended. By the end of the 20th century, many believers have left the unworldly ''super-naturalistic'' preconciliar church behind. Those who leave the church, often leave a church that claims to be the direct mediator of God''s will. However, the church is not a flawless gift from heaven. It is the vulnerable work of human beings which tries to find accurate
God the future of man by Edward Schillebeeckx( Book )

18 editions published between 1968 and 2014 in English and held by 739 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

God, the Future of Man focuses on religion and secularisation, viewed from various vantage points: secularisation and God-talk; secularisation and the church''s liturgy; secularisation and the church''s new self-understanding; and, finally, secularisation and the future of humankind on earth in light of the eschaton (church and social politics). These thought-provoking reflections are presented against the backdrop of Schillebeeckx''s hermeneutic premises. In the concluding chapter his reflections on secularisation culminate in a God concept that can function fruitfully in a modern culture tha

The understanding of faith: interpretation and criticism by Edward Schillebeeckx( Book )

19 editions published between 1974 and 2014 in English and French and held by 635 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author is concerned with three things: an ongoing, living, community-based faith; openness towards science and scientific method; and an effective Christian praxis. How are these related? It is the problem of faith and reason with the addition of a third elements, action. Under the heading 'reason' come linguistics and Jürgen Habermas' critical theory of society; and this last, neo-Marxist theory presses on Christianity the question of the relation between faith and action in our world
The Eucharist by Edward Schillebeeckx( Book )

22 editions published between 1968 and 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 627 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What does it mean to say that Christ is really present in the Eucharist? Catholic teaching since Trent has presented this belief in terms of the transubstantiation of bread and wine, but how far is it meaningful for us? Can we not find more meaning in terms like transignification and transfinalisation? The author argues that, since the Eucharist is first and foremost a personal communication of Christ to his Church, we must indeed talk of a change in the meaning and purpose of the bread and wine. But transubstantiation does say something more than this, inasmuch as the change in question here is one initiated by the word of Christ himself, and is therefore much more than a merely human action. This book, the author insists, is not a comprehensive treatment of the mystery of the Eucharist, but it is nevertheless a brilliant summary of an important element in it, and also raises the wider question of the nature of reality for man and what is distinctive in the Christian's understanding of it."
