Communicating racism : ethnic prejudice in thought and talk by Teun A. van Dijk( Book )

34 editions published between 1986 and 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 997 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book analyses how racism is reproduced through everyday talk and how ethnic prejudices become shared and may form the cognitive basis of ethnic or racial discrimination in intergroup interaction. The study, based on interviews conducted in California and Amsterdam, focuses on how ethnic attitudes expressed in discourse exhibit sociocultural, historical, political, and economic dependencies. The book is divided into seven major chapters. Chapter 1, "Introduction," discusses the background and goals of the study, the data methodology, and the structure of the problem. Chapter 2, "Structures of Prejudiced Discourse," clarifies how ethnic attitudes, especially prejudice, are represented and strategically used in memory, and how such representations and strategies affect intergroup perceptions, evaluations, and interactions. Chapter 3, "Sources of Prejudiced Talk," analyzes how ethnic prejudice becomes manifest in discourse. Chapter 4, "The Cognitive Dimension: Structures and Strategies of Ethnic Prejudice," examines how discourse about ethnic minority groups is monitored by interaction strategies, social goals, norms, and values. Chapter 5, "The Interpersonal Communication of Racism," analyzes how prejudiced discourse is understood, evaluated, and represented by in-group recipients who participate in such talk. Chapter 6, "The Social and Ideological Context of Prejudice Reproduction," discusses how the communication and diffusion of prejudiced group attitudes transcend the level of single, isolated, interpersonal conversations. Chapter 7 presents general conclusions and considers areas for future research. An appendix provides information about data collection. (Kh)

What are the structures of discourse and what are the functions of these structures in the communicative context? This volume explains how and why discourse is organized at various levels. The multidisciplinary contributions illustrate that discourse analysis goes far beyond the linguistic answer of designing grammars and goes hand in hand with the study of their uses and functions in the social context. Comprehensive and accessible, the volume covers a huge variety of discourse genres, including written and spoken, and storytelling and argumentation. The chapters also illustrate the necessity
Discourse and context : a socio-cognitive approach by Teun A. van Dijk( Book )

28 editions published between 2008 and 2010 in English and held by 336 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How do social situations influence language use, discourse and conversation? This book is the first monograph to present a multidisciplinary theory of context and the way context influences language use and discourse. Unlike in earlier approaches, contexts are not defined as objective social 'variables', such as gender or age. Rather, they are constructs of the participants themselves, that is, 'subjective definitions of the communicative situation' that are made explicit in the new sociocognitive notion of context models. These models dynamically control all language use, make sure that discourses are appropriate in the communicative situation and hence are the basis of pragmatics. In this book, context models are studied especially from a (socio) linguistic and cognitive perspective. In another book published by Cambridge University Press, Society and Discourse, Teun A. van Dijk develops the social psycho-logical, sociological and anthro-pological dimensions of the theory of context
Prejudice in discourse : an analysis of ethnic prejudice in cognition and conversation by Teun A. van Dijk( Book )

18 editions published in 1984 in English and Undetermined and held by 310 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, a study is made of ethnic prejudice in cognition and conversation, based on intensive interviewing of white majority group members. After an introductory survey of traditional and more recent approaches in social psychology to the study of prejudice, a new 'sociocognitive' theory is sketched. This theory explains how cognitive representations and strategies of ethnic prejudice depend on their social functions within intergroup relations. It is also shown how ethnic prejudice is communicated in society through everyday talk among majority members. The major part of the book system
Society and discourse : how social contexts influence text and talk by Teun A. van Dijk( Book )

28 editions published between 2008 and 2012 in English and held by 309 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Van Dijk presents a new theory of context that explains how text and talk are adapted to their social environment. He argues that instead of the usual direct relationship being established between society and discourse, this influence is indirect and depends on how language users themselves 'define' the communicative situation. The new concept van Dijk introduces for such definitions is that of context models. These models control all language production and understanding and explain how discourse is made appropriate in each situation. They are the missing link between language and society so far ignored in pragmatics and sociolinguistics. In this interdisciplinary book, the new theory of context is developed by examining the analysis of the structure of social situations in social psychology and sociology and their cultural variation in anthropology. The theory is applied to the domain of politics, including the debate about the war in Iraq, where political leaders' speeches serve as a case study for detailed contextual analysis."--Jacket

Racism and discourse in Spain and Latin America by Teun A. van Dijk( Book )

15 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 171 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Through careful analysis of the media, political discourse, textbooks and other public discourses in these countries he shows that discursive euro-racism is ubiquitous also in countries outside Europe. Spain reproduces, but as yet in a less radical way, the kind of racist discourse we find elsewhere in Western Europe
