Mothers and sons : in their own words by Mariana Ruth Cook( Book )

5 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mothers and Sons: In Their Own Words captures the compelling connections between mothers and sons and translates those subtle emotions into deceptively simple photographs." "In the accompanying texts, mothers and sons reveal their most trying and their most exalted moments with candor and humor, recounting both extraordinary actions and everyday existence with enthusiasm, from a parent's lyrical essay to a two year old's uncomplicated observations. With an introduction by Isabel Allende, Mothers and Sons is a powerful tribute in both words and images to the unique yet universal relationship between mothers and sons."--Jacket

Stone walls : personal boundaries by Mariana Cook( Book )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and Italian and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Far from being a travelogue, these beautiful black-and-white photographs portray the wall in landscape, the wall as abstract form, and the return of rocks to nature. Cook is fascinated with the juxtaposition of stones and geometric composition, as well as with the resonance betweens walls of different cultures. The walls photographed range from 1600 BC to the present time. With a tribute from Wendell Berry and essays providing a context for the walls of each region, this collection captures something fundamental about the relationship of human beings to the land."--Page [2] of dust jacket

Justice : faces of the human rights revolution by Mariana Ruth Cook( Book )

4 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Introduces us to some of the women and men who are the faces of the human rights revolution, among them former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the 39th American President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Burmese democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi. Cook traveled the world to photograph and interview her subjects, and the accompanying texts--some written by the subjects themselves, others edited from interviews with them--share their insights into the nature and importance of human rights, and their reasons for devoting themselves to that cause. Through them we are reminded of the power of a single individual--one face, one voice--to transform the world. These human rights pioneers seek no personal gain: any rewards are the benefits that we all enjoy when the rule of democratic law protects us. The pictures and the words in this book show the strength of human character that has made human rights such a powerful movement across the world in our lifetime. From publisher description
Lifeline by Mariana Cook( Book )

3 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and Spanish and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Close at hand by Mariana Cook( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a bold departure from her portraiture, acclaimed photographer Mariana Cook turns her eye to overlooked surroundings found close at hand. Cook set herself the task of making one photograph every day. The resulting work is a tribute to the art of looking closely. It is a celebration of form and transformation, a warm and thankful awareness of the world around us. It is impossible to resist these intimate images - a single egg, bands of light on a carpeted floor, a child's feet in the sand - or to remain unaffected by the subtle poignancy of the familiar made mysterious. Unadorned and pure, these pictures offer a welcome respite from the cacophony of our restless, distracted, too busy lives. They remind us to slow down, take note, and breathe."--Jacket
