Dimensions and use of the scholarly information environment : introduction to a data set by Amy Friedlander( Book )

4 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We know from anecdotal evidence that users' expectations of libraries are changing as they find more information directly from the Web. Anecdotal evidence, though, is hardly enough for developing persuasive plans for new library services. The Digital Library Federation (DLF) and Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) commissioned Outsell, Inc., to conduct a large-scale study of undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty members from academic institutions ranging from the small liberal arts college to the largest research university. Our hope was that a picture of user behavior would emerge. This report presents a summary of the findings and 158 selected data tables; it should be viewed as an entry to a much larger data set. The full set of 659 data tables provided by Outsell will be mounted on CLIR's or DLF's Web site. We encourage readers to make use of these tables and ask that you share with us your analyses of the data. In addition, CLIR will deposit the raw data tapes with the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). CLIR and DLF expect to commission additional work based on the data
Yaughan and Curriboo plantations : studies in Afro-American archaeology by Thomas R Wheaton( Book )

6 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This report details an archaeological testing and mitigation effort conducted by Soil Systems Inc. at six historic sites in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The purpose of the project was to assess the significance of the sites and to mitigate the construction impacts of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Cooper River Rediversion Canal Project. Five sites were tested during spring 1979. Three of these sites and an additional site recommended by Interagency Archeological Services-Atlanta were subjected to intensive data recovery during the summer and fall of 1979. Twenty-nine structures and many associated features were examined at two eighteenth century plantations. Historical research produced evidence sufficient to characterize their slave occupations. The results of this research included extensive archaeological and historical data shedding light on eighteenth century African slaves. The conclusions offer new insights into the institution of slavery and offer a basis for future research."--Abstract, page i

To Stand the Test of Time: Long-Term Stewardship of Digital Data Sets inScience and Engineering. a Report to the National Science Foundationfrom the Arl Workshop on New Collaborative Relationships--the Role ofAcademic Libraries in the Digital Data Universe (Arlington, Virginia,September 26-27, 2006) by Amy Friedlander( Book )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The rapid adoption of information technology and ubiquitous networking has transformed the research and education landscape. Central to this transformation are scientific and engineering digital data collections. The life cycle management challenges associated with these intellectual assets are substantial. This is a report of a two-day workshop that examined the role of research and academic libraries with other partners in the stewardship of scientific and engineering digital data. Workshop participants explored issues concerning the need for new partnerships and collaborations among domain scientists, librarians, and data scientists to better manage digital data collections; necessary infrastructure development to support digital data; and the need for sustainable economic models to support long-term stewardship of scientific and engineering digital data for the nation's cyberinfrastructure. The workshop builds on prior studies supported by the National Science Foundation (nsf), engaging numerous research communities. It reflects the recognition, voiced in many nsf workshop reports, that digital data stewardship is fundamental to the future of scientific and engineering research and the education enterprise, and hence to innovation and competitiveness. Overall, it is clear that an ecology of institutional arrangements among individuals and organizations, sharing an infrastructure, will be required to address the particularities of heterogeneous digital data and diverse scholarly and professional cultures. The background of the workshop is described in Chapter I. Descriptions of the discussions of the three major topics from the three breakout groups and in plenary sessions are provided in Chapters ii, iii, and iv, and Chapter v discusses additional topics raised in the plenary sessions and final recommendations. Appended are: (1) List of Participants; (2) Agenda; (3) Plenary Papers; (4) Breakout Session Reports; (5) Position Papers; and (6) Examples of Scientific Community Archives. (Contains 11 figures, 2 boxes, 20 footnotes and 5 endnotes.)
