Work attitudes and labor market experience : evidence from the national longitudinal surveys by Paul J Andrisani( Book )

14 editions published between 1977 and 1978 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study was done to examine the influence of several work attitudes on a number of facets of subsequent labor market experience, as well as the influence of labor market experience on the work attitudes. Based on interview data on about 20,000 respondents from the National Longitudinal Surveys representative national samples of men 14 to 24 and 45 to 59, and women 14 to 24 and 30 to 44, analysis revealed consistent and systematic effects of a number of work attitudes on the respondents' subsequent success in the world of work over the next two to five years. Additionally, the data provided considerable support for the hypothesis that success and failure in work roles help shape the work attitudes people come to hold. Confidence in these findings is strengthened by the fact that the observed relationships were independent of individual differences in skills, abilities, and demographic distribution, and were obtained on the basis of longitudinal as well as cross-sectional data. The new public management : lessons from innovating governors and mayors by Paul J Andrisani( Book )

14 editions published between 2002 and 2013 in English and held by 204 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume brings together the innovative ideas of 21 of America's leading governors and mayors expressed in their own words. The book features contributions carefully collected and selected over several years, including chapters by former Governors George Bush of Texas and Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin and Mayors Giuliani and Daley of New York and Chicago respectively. The editors have cast these varied contributions within the framework of "the New Public Management", whose main elements are: (1) reverting to core functions; (2) devolving authority and decentralizing; (3) "rightsizing", or limiting the size and scope of government; (4) restoring civil society; (5) adopting market principles; (6) managing for results, satisfying citizens, and holding government accountable; (7) empowering employees, citizens, and communities; and (8) introducing e-government and modern technology

An empirical analysis of the dual labor market theory by Paul J Andrisani( Book )

16 editions published between 1973 and 1998 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study focuses upon the process of labor market entry of male youth in the context of the dual labor market theory. Essentially, the dual market theory contends that a large body of workers is involuntarily confined to substandard jobs in a "secondary" labor market which is separated from the mainstream, or "primary" sector by impenetrable boundaries imposed by institutionalized discrimination. Briefly, the study finds a substantial amount of upward mobility from time of first job to 1968--a period ranging from 2 to 10 years. Nonetheless, entry into and confinement within the secondary sector cannot be consistently explained solely in terms of deficiencies in aggregate demand, human capital, or motivation. Moreover, the evidence also suggests the existence of discrimination against blacks in terms of earnings. (Author)

Career thresholds : a longitudinal study of the educational and labor market experience of male youth 14-24 years of age by Ohio State University( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study deals with the impact of collective bargaining coverage on the 1969-70 labor market experience of young men in blue collar jobs. Specifically examined is the impact of collective bargaining on five dimensions of the labor market experience: (1) hourly rate of pay, (2) hours worked per week, (3) susceptibility to unemployment, (4) duration of unemployment, and (5) growth in hourly earnings. Additionally, the relationship between collective bargaining coverage and racial differentials in these dimensions is explored. Sections deal with: gross union-nonunion differences in labor market experience; union-nonunion differences in personal (including educational background) and situational characteristics; net effects of collective bargaining on earnings and labor market experience; and comparison of racial differences in the union and nonunion sectors. Data on the five dimensions are presented according to major occupation group and race. Two major conclusions are: (1) collective bargaining coverage has considerable net impact on earnings of all workers studied, and (2) unionized blacks experience less unemployment than nonunionized blacks. Appended are: tables showing regression results; a 33-item bibliography; a glossary; an account of sample attrition; a description of sampling, interviewing, and estimating procedures; and the 22-page Census Bureau survey instrument used for interviews in 1970. The economic returns to military service by Thomas N Daymont( )

2 editions published between 1986 and 1991 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This research assesses the economic returns to military service by examining the impact of service on in-service and post-service earnings. It extends the authors' previous research in several ways. First, it builds an extensive literature review on the subject since our research was completed. The review focuses on techniques of measuring the economic returns to military service. Second, it adjusts the earnings equations for self-selection bias. Third, it extends our earlier analysis and model development to female veterans and nonveterans, where the theoretical, empirical, and econometric issues are not precisely analogous to those for men. Fourth, it uses the most military data available from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth
