Lyric powers by Robert Von Hallberg( )

12 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in English and held by 1,392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"To explain why a reader might prefer one kind of poem to another, von Hallberg moves beyond thematic significance to analyze the varieties of musicality found in both lyric poetry and popular song, including that of Tin Pan Alley and doowop. The sonic orders of lyric poetry express a comprehensive affirmation, often social or even political, that he traces through readings of poems, many recent and a few ancient. He shows that poets have distinctive intellectual resources - not just rhetorical resources - for examining their subjects, and that the power of poetic language to generalize, not particularize, is what justly deserves a critic's attention and meets the most widespread expectations of readers."--Jacket

The Maltese Falcon to Body of Lies : spies, noirs, and trust by Robert Von Hallberg( )

6 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 626 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Film noir is by definition dark, but not, this book argues, desperate. Characters in noir movies repeatedly implore one another, 'Trust me!' Although trust may not save the characters, it is often a horizon of hope. Examining twenty-eight great noir films from the first noir, The Maltese Falcon (1941), and other early examples such as The Big Sleep and Out of the Past, to such twenty-first century spy films as The Good Shepherd, Syriana, and The Bourne Ultimatus, this philosophical study sets out what audiences may understand about the representations of trust and commitment that noirs and spies propose. Recent films about international intrigue, the author posits, depict what happens when individuals give their primary allegiance to the state, and the moral consequences of that position are a major subject of this thought-provoking book."--Back cover

Literary intellectuals and the dissolution of the state : professionalism and conformity in the GDR by Robert Von Hallberg( Book )

8 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 371 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For two generations, writers in the German Democratic Republic enjoyed a massive audience in their own country, a readership dependent on their works for a measure of utopian solace amid the grimness of life under Communism. But after the fall of the Berlin Wall, these writers were abandoned by their readers and stripped of the professional structures that had supported them. Their literary culture destroyed, they were rebuked for compliant service to the discredited state; and some were reviled for collaborating with the East German secret police, the Stasi. What drove leading thinkers, including those of the avant-garde who publicly embraced intellectual freedom, to serve as government informants? Why were they content to work within a repressive system rather than challenging it outright? This collection of interviews with more than two dozen writers and literary scholars, including several Stasi informants, provides a gripping, often dismaying picture of the motivations, compromises, and illusions of East German intellectual life

Simulations of underwater plumes of dissolved oil in the Gulf of Mexico( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"A simple model of the temperature-dependent biological decay of dissolved oil is embedded in an oceanclimate model and used to simulate underwater plumes of dissolved and suspended oil originating from a point source in the northern Gulf of Mexico, with an upper-bound supply rate estimated from the contemporary analysis of the Deepwater Horizon blowout. The behavior of plumes at different depths is found to be determined by the combination of sheared current strength and the vertical profile of decay rate. For all plume scenarios, toxic levels of dissolved oil remain confined to the northern Gulf of Mexico, and abate within weeks after the spill stops. An estimate of oxygen consumption due to microbial oxidation of hydrocarbons suggests that a deep plume of hydrocarbons could lead to localized regions of prolonged hypoxia near the source, but only when oxidation of methane is included"--Abstract
