Collections of essays surveying the historical discipline at the end of the 1970s heralded the new approaches being developed approaches that promised a rich diversity and cosmopolitan pluralism in the face of the uncertainty of historical reality. The essayists in this successor volume, surveying the work of the 1980s, find that these new approaches have not brought satisfactory results, and argue that traditional practices, reassessed and properly understood, constitute the true scientific grounding of the discipline. Objective reality is obtainable, the historian's subjectivity can be understood rationally, historical sources and causal strategies can be managed objectively. In brief, a truthful account of the past is possible, but it must be both objective and subjective
Western and Russian historiography : recent views( Book )

15 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 243 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this collection, the first of its kind, Western and Russian scholars reassess the fundamental suppositions of historiography from their respective orientations. Yet the argumentative engagements are fully as much within these centers as across them in an opposition of "bourgeois" and "Marxist". Western commentary criticizes Marxism but also addresses the fragmentation and uncertainty resulting from the overdevelopment of diversity and pluralism in its own recent past. Russian commentary, under glasnost and perestroika, criticizes Western thinking, but, even more so, seventy years of misguided Marxist thought. These two bodies of thought can be seen converging, potentially, upon a common set of understandings
