The Barracks, The Dark, The Leavetaking, The Pornographer, Amongst Women, The Collected Stories, "Creatures of the Earth", That They May Face the Rising Sun by Vanina Jobert-Martini( Book )

3 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this study is to analyse time-related structures in John McGahern's novels and short stories. The first part is sentence-based. I deal with the main linguistic forms expressing time in the English language before summing up Genette's theory on story time and narrative time. These considerations are followed by the detailed analysis of three short stories. The second part focuses on the narrative level. We successively examine each of the six novels in order to expose the evolution of style and of themes. The last part builds on the conclusions of the second and encompasses the short stories. It gives a bird's-eye view of McGahern's specific vision of time by relating the experience of the characters to that of the author and of the reader
Le texte et la voix : étude des phénomènes paralinguistiques dans quatre romans d'Edith Wharton : 1862-1937 : The House of Mirth; Ethan Frome; The Custom of the Country; The Age of Innocence by Manuel Jobert( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On examine ensuite quatre roman du corpus whartonien dans une perspective paralinguistique : The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, The Custom of the Country et The Age of Innocence.

2 editions published in 1999 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 1995 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

OUR PURPOSE IS THE STUDY OF TWENTY ORAL TALES COLLECTED FROM PEOPLE LIVING IN CASABLANCA (MOROCCO). THESE TALES ARE TRANSCRIBED AND TRANSLATED INTO FRENCH. IT WILL BE BOTH A LITERARY AN LITERAL TRANSLATION. THIS PROCESS IS ACCOMPANIED BY A STUDY OF THE PROBLEMS POSED BY THE TRANSLATION OF ORAL TALES. THE REBUILDING OF A STANDARD TALE WAS MEANT TO GIVE AN IDEA OF THE SHAPE A TALE HAD IN THE BEGINNING WITH ALL THE CONSTRAINTS AND CEREMONIAL THAT WENT WITH IT. ALL THE TALES COLLECTED ARE COMPARED WITH THIS MODEL IN ORDER TO SEE THE DEGREE OF LIKENESS OR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM. AN ENONCIATIVE (WORDING) ANALYSIS WAS MADE SO AS TO DETECT SIGNES OF THE STORY-TELLER'S PRESENCE IN THIS PRACTICE, AND THIS AT SEVERAL LEVELS : THROUGHOUT THE TALE, THE DISCOURSE LAYS IN THE DIALOGUES, IN VERBAL COMMUNICATION AND "NO VERBAL" COMMUNICATION. THIS ANALYSIS IS SUSTAINED BY AN IDEA WHICH AIMS AT REVISING THE GENERAL DEFINITION OF THE TALE WHICH MINIMISES THE NARRATOR'S PART. BESIDES, THIS ANALYSIS AIMS AT CLASSIFYING THE TALE AMONG "ORAL INTERACTIONS" GOVERNED BY "CONVERSATIONAL MAXIMS". IT ALSO AIMS AT CREATING A NEW CATEGORY OF REPORTED SPEECH ABLE TO INCLUDE A KIND OF DISCOURSE SPOTTED IN THESE TALES BUT WHICH CANNOT FIND ITS PLACE IN THE OLD CLASSIFICATION. THE PLACE OF AUDIENCE AND THE MARKS OF THEIR PRESENCE ARE STUDIED TOO. THE PART PLAYED BY THE GROUP IN THE STORY TELLING, IS EXAMINED THROUGH THE SIGNS OF THE DISTANCE MADE BETWEEN THEM BY THE FEMALE STORY TELLERS

1 edition published in 1987 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

THIS THESIS IS A STUDY OF THE STYLISTIC FEATURES OF NARRATIVE POINT OF VIEW IN THE SHORT STORIES OF DYLAN THOMAS; IT FIRST TRIES TO SHOW HOW POINT OF VIEW CAN BE ESTABLISHED AS BEING THAT OF THE REFERENT OF THE SUBJECT OF THE VERBS OF MENTAL PROCESS, THAT OF THE DECITIC CENTRE, AND THAT OF THE REFERENT OF THE SUBJECT OF SPEECH ACTS. THE SECOND PART IS ABOUT THE DIFFERENT MEANS OF EXPRESSION OF POINT OF VIEW, PARTICULARLY AS THEY ARE TO BE FOUND IN THE INFORMATION STRUCTURE AND THE SYSTEM OF EVALUATION. THEN, WE HAVE TRIED TO STUDY HOW ALL THOSE ELEMENTS COMBINE IN THE VARIOUS SORTS OF SPEECH AND THOUGHT REPRESENTATIONS, DIRECT AND FREE DIRECT STYLES, INDIRECT AND FREE INDIRECT STYLES. THE THIRD PART DEALS WITH THE RELATIONS BETWEEN POINT OF VIEW AND THE READER ; HOW THE READER BECOMES INVOLVED IN RECONSTRUCTING A MEANING AND A POINT OF VIEW, ESPECIALLY IN THE CASE OF METAPHOR. FINALLY IN THE LAST PART, WE TRIED TO PUT TOGETHER ALL THOSE ELEMENTS AND STUDY THE WAY THEY COMBINE IN THREE SHORT STORIES FROM PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG DOG : " THE PEACHES", "WHERE TAWE FLOWS, AND "ONE WARM SATURDAY", EACH BEING REPRESENTATIVE OF A SPECIFIC POINT OF VIEW, RESPECTIVELY SYMPATHETIC, DISTANCED, AND AMBIVALENT
