King and Charcoal Burner: The theme of the opera is from old legend of the rescue of a Czech ruler (probably prince Jaromír of Bohemia of the Přemyslid dynasty, or his brother Oldřich of Bohemia) who gets lost in the woods of Křivoklát. One of the main characters -- the charcoal burner Matěj -- was taken by Lobeský from the puppet theatre play Feast Day in Hudlice (based on the same theme). Lobeský also replaced the Přemyslid king with the Habsburg Emperor Matthias (and thus shifted the action from the 11th to the 17th century). As Matěj is the familiar form of Matthias in Czech, Dvořák gained two characters with the same names -- one poor, one rich. The king mingles incognito among the common folk (a frequently recurring theme in Czech culture of that time), so the plot is based on the merging of the worlds of the aristocracy and the common folk

3 editions published in 1994 in Czech and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An exciting performance of Smetana's historic-tragic operatic masterpiece, Dalibor, a romantic tale of chivalry and patriotism. Gustav Mahler first conducted Dalibor in Vienna and this probably represents his performing version. Never before available at budget price, this opera stars the legendary soprano Leonie Rysanek along with her younger sister, Lotte, also a fine singer, and the heroic tenor Ludovic Spiess who will surprise those who haven't heard of him!

The world-famous singer, conductor and the holder of 14 Grammy Awards Placido Domingo came up, as conductor and artistic director, with a unique Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre Prague, where the opera had its premiere 230 years ago. The production boasts an original classic scene, traditional costumes, designed by Theodor Pistek, the Oscar winner for 'Best Costume Design' in Amadeus and authentic stage direction matching the performance features from 1787. The production is conceived as a replica of the legendary staging by the National Theatre Opera from 1969. The opera shines under the direction of Jiri Nekvasil, which is further enhanced by stars of the Czech opera scene, handpicked by Maestro Domingo himself. Also adding vitality to the production are four winners of the renowned, international vocal competition, Operalia, which Domingo himself founded in 1993: Irina Lungu, Dmitry Korchak, Julia Novikova, and Simone Alberghini
